Research Retreat (June 2021)
The Research Retreat was hosted on 16 June 2021 via Zoom Webinar. The event kicked off with a welcoming speech by Prof TAN Cheng-Han (Dean, CityU School of Law). Prof Tan extended a warm welcome to all participants.
The Research Retreat consisted of three sessions. The first session, the discussion on Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2020, was moderated by Prof WAN Wai Yee (Associate Dean, CityU School of Law). The topics of the presentation were as follows (according to the order of presentation):

To start with, Prof Wan indicated that the number of research output ranked as 4* and 3* in RAE 2020 had double-digit increases as with 2014. While this proved that our School had achieved greater success in research output in 2020 than in 2014, there was still room for improvement. To this end, the School should work together in terms of research environment and impact case studies.
Following the brief introduction by Prof Wan, Prof Tsimplis and Prof Crofts shared their views on what constituted significant impact case studies based on the UK REF and Australian ERA exercises.
The Research Retreat then moved on to the next section—the workplan and accomplishments of research centres since the last session in September 2020. Prof WANG Jiangyu (Director, Centre for Chinese and Comparative Law (CCCL)), Prof Alexander LOKE (Director, Hong Kong Commercial and Maritime Law Centre (HKCML)), Prof ZHU Guobin (Director, Public Law and Human Rights Forum (CPLR)) and Prof LIN Feng (Director, Centre for Judicial Education and Research (CJER)) gave detailed presentations on their centres’ past events and future plans. The research centres would strive to yield more output and strengthen their influence by collaborating with more external parties through high-profile events.
Before the Retreat came to an end, Prof Wan shared her experiences on getting a larger-scale research grant in Hong Kong. Putting together a team from at least two institutions in Hong Kong and pilot studies were things she would like to stress when applying for a huge grant, worth noting that solutions or explanations would be needed when pilot studies were lacking.
The day ended with closing remarks by Prof Tan. He expressed his appreciation for the constructive sharing from colleagues.
研究研討營於 2021 年 6 月 16 日透過 Zoom Webinar 舉行。會議首先由香港城市大學法律學院院長陳清漢教授致歡迎辭揭開序幕。陳教授感謝所有與會者對本次會議的支持。
是次研究營分為三部分。第一部分是關於 2020 年研究評估練習 (RAE) 的討論，由城大法律學院副院長溫慧儀教授主持。演講的主題如下（根據演講的順序）︰

首先，溫教授指出在 RAE 2020 中評分為 4*和 3*的研究成果數量與 2014 年相比有兩位數的增長。儘管 這顯示法律學院 2020 年的研究成果比 2014 年取得更大的成功，我們仍有進步的空間。為此，學院應在 研究環境和影響案例研究方面協作努力。

接下來，研究營進入下一部分 — 自 2020 年 9 月上次會議以來研究中心的工作計劃和成就。中國比較法 研究中心（CCCL）主任王江雨教授，香港商務及海事法研究中心（HKCML）主任陸飛鴻教授，公共 法和人權論壇（CPLR）主任朱國斌教授及司法教育研究中心（CJER）主任林峰教授詳細回顧了中心舉 辦的演講活動及介紹未來計劃。在未來，各研究中心將通過與更多外部各方合作的活動，致力達成更多 研究成果並增強其影響力。
會議結束前，溫教授分享了她在香港獲得大規模研究資助金的經驗。在申請巨額資助時，她強調需要組 成來自至少兩個香港機構的團隊和進行試點研究。值得注意的是，若沒條件作試點研究時，研究人員將 需要提供解決方案或解釋。
會議由陳教授致辭總結。他讚賞同事們提出具建設性的分享。
