Research conducted by Dr. Lauren Yu-Hsin LIN regarding the corporate governance of Chinese state-owned enterprises has been relied upon by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the disclosure rule under a newly-enacted federal law—Holding Foreign Companies Accountable Act (HFCA). The public comment submitted by Dr. Lin and her co-author Professor Curtis MILHAUPT, the William F. Baxter-Visa International Professor of Law at Stanford Law School, pointed out the insufficiencies of the current rules and suggested appropriate changes in accordance with their findings in the paper “Party Building or Noisy Signaling? The Contours of Political Conformity in Chinese Corporate Governance”, which is published in The Journal of Legal Studies, Volume 50, Number 1 (2021). Their comment has been extensively cited and adopted by the SEC in the final rule published on 2 December 2021. The same paper has also been cited in the 2021 Annual Report of The United States-China Economic and Security Review Commission in formulating policies relating to Chinese companies. This demonstrates that Dr. Lin’s research has made real world impact and contributed significantly to the policy-making of the international community.
