The 28th Goff Arbitration Lecture cum Book Launch of “Goff Arbitration Lectures 1990-2022”
CityU School of Law, in cooperation with Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) and Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC), held the 28th Goff Arbitration Lecture cum Book Launch of “Goff Arbitration Lectures 1990-2022” on 14 March 2024. This year, we were honoured to have Mr Justin GLEESON SC, former Solicitor-General of Australia, a leading international arbitration practitioner and barrister, as the speaker to give a lecture entitled “International Arbitration – Can It Survive and Prosper in the Face of Incommensurable Methods of Fact Finding?”. More than 100 participants attended the lecture at HKIAC and via Zoom.
The lecture kicked off with the welcome speech by Professor Thomas CROFTS (Associate Dean and Professor, School of Law, CityU). Professor Crofts explained the background and objectives of the Goff Arbitration Lecture. He also introduced the speaker and thanked all the participants for their support for the lecture over the years.
In his lecture, Mr Gleeson talked about the common law system, the civil law system and how the two systems are coming together in international arbitration. He also made some suggestions for how we can do even better in international arbitration. After the lecture, the participants raised questions and interacted with Mr Gleeson in the Q&A session moderated by Mr Neil KAPLAN CBE KC SBS (International Arbitrator, Arbitration Chambers). Then, Mr Antony CROCKETT (Partner, HSF) closed the lecture and thanked Mr Gleeson for delivering an insightful lecture.
Following the lecture, a book launch was held, in which Mr Kaplan introduced the contents of the Goff Lecture book and expressed his gratitude to people who supported the lecture series and the book all the way through.
Finally, Professor Christopher TO (Adjunct Professor and Master of Laws in Arbitration and Dispute Resolution Programme Director, School of Law, CityU) thanked all the attendees for their participation and welcomed them to the cocktail reception.
2024年3月14日，城大法律學院與香港國際仲裁中心及史密夫斐爾律師事務所合作，在香港國際仲裁中心舉行了第二十八屆戈夫仲裁講座暨「戈夫仲裁講座1990-2022」新書發佈會。今年，學院很榮幸邀請到前澳洲聯邦副檢察長、知名的國際仲裁專家和大律師Justin GLEESON先生主講「國際仲裁 – 面對不可通約的事實調查方法，它能否生存和繁榮？」。講座吸引了100餘人到場或在線參與。
講座由城大法律學院副院長Thomas CROFTS 教授致歡迎辭揭開序幕。CROFTS 教授解釋了戈夫仲裁講座的背景和目的，亦介紹了GLEESON先生並感謝所有參與者對講座一直以來的支持。
GLEESON先生在演講中談到了普通法系、大陸法系以及這兩種體系如何在國際仲裁中融合。他還就我們如何在國際仲裁中做得更好提出了一些建議。演講結束之後，聽眾向講者提問，與講者積極互動。提問環節由獨立仲裁員嘉柏倫先生主持。隨後，史密夫斐爾律師事務所合夥人Antony CROCKETT先生向講者致謝，感謝他為大家帶來一場精彩而富有啟發性的講座。
講座結束後，舉行了「戈夫仲裁講座1990-2022」的新書發佈會。嘉柏倫先生介紹了該書的內容，並向一直以來支持戈夫仲裁講座及新書出版的人們表示感謝。
最後，城大法律學院客席教授、法學碩士（仲裁及爭議解決學）課程主任陶榮教授感謝與會者的參與並歡迎大家參加酒會。
