Industrial Attachment Scheme (IAS)

The Industrial Attachment Scheme (IAS) takes place from June to August for a minimum of 9 weeks and is offered to students who have completed their third year of studies. Jointly supervised by an academic supervisor and a company mentor, the training takes the form of a structured project or day-to-day work, through which students can gain an exposure to industry.

Support from industry

Students can work in HK, the Pearl River Delta and other parts of China. When recruiting an intern, the host company is expected to:

  • provide a training relevant to the student’s major study;
  • provide an allowance to the student;
  • assign a company mentor to co-supervise the student with a CityUHK supervisor;
  • provide support on lodging, meal and free transportation between factory and dormitory/border checks for students posted to Mainland China

The host company needs to know:

Insurance

Students are covered under a Group Personal Accident Insurance Policy and for those who need to travel outside HK, a Group Travel Insurance Policy in addition.

Minimum Wage Ordinance

The Minimum Wage Ordinance does not apply to student interns.

MPF

During the attachment period, the interns maintain their status as full-time students of CityUHK. There is no employer-employee relationship between the interns and the company unless the two parties enter into such a relationship by way of an employment contract. If an employer-employee relationship is set up, contribution of MPF may be necessary.

Interested companies can send email to Ms. Janice Lam at jan.lam@cityu.edu.hk.

Application Procedures

Interested students should submit their application in March. Please refer to the Application page for further details.

CSCI4002 Industrial Attachment Scheme for Science Students

Students accepting the IAS offer will be registered on a 3-CU course CSCI4002 Industrial Attachment Scheme for Science Students in summer. The status of CSCI4002 in a programme major or how each major recognizes it depends on the major requirements. Any related queries should be directed to Department.

Beware of exceeding the maximum credit limit:

Please note that the maximum number of credit units permitted for a degree is as follows:

  • 4-year degree: 144 credit units (AR 4.1)
  • Advanced Standing I: 114 credit units (AR 6.4.1)
  • Advanced Standing II: 84 credit units (AR 6.5.1)

Students who have completed the maximum credit units permitted as mentioned above cannot register for further courses in subsequent semesters/terms except for (a) those pursuing a double major or double degree paying the extra credits exceeding the above maximum credit limit on a self-financed basis; or (b) students who have been granted special approval to exceed the maximum credit limit due to their change of home major. For any queries on this issue. Please check with Academic Regulations and Records Office (ARRO) and/or students' parent department.

If students will exceed the maximum credit limit upon addition of CSCI4002 (3 CUs), they should seek advice from the College and Department before they apply.

Job List

Job list for summer 2025 can be viewed here.

Eligibility

  1. Penultimate year students. Full-time undergraduates, local or non-local, from College of Science.
  2. For non-local students, the final approval rests with the Immigration Department of HKSAR
  3. Students on outbound exchange programme in Semester B can apply through the online system but need to understand that greater chances will be given to students who can attend interviews in HK. IAS must begin in early June. There will be no adjustment to meet individual needs.
  4. OIS candidates: OIS candidates who are still without offers and wish to join IAS need to submit an IAS application in March as other fellow students. The College will withhold their IAS applications until rejection/withdrawal from OIS is confirmed.

Student-initiated IAS

Students who wish to bring in an IAS post or IAS company need to apply to the College in advance. They must secure the position before the College contacts the company to explain the IAS requirements to them. If the company can fulfill all the requirements, the placement at the company can be counted as IAS.

Please complete the application form and submit to Ms. Janice Lam at jan.lam@cityu.edu.hk by the stated deadline for enrolling in the related semester.

Commitment

IAS involves many stakeholders, especially the host companies. Therefore, the submission of an IAS application is a commitment of participation in the very first place. Once an interview is granted and an offer made, the training company expects students to turn up. Students will be given 3 working days to consider whether they will accept it. Once they have accepted the offer, by signing an Acceptance of Offer and a Course Registration Undertaking, they will not be allowed to withdraw. Withdrawal will result in failure of the internship and the course it contributes to.
