UG Info Day 2024 Participants Had Fun at the College’s Science Corner
CityUHK’s UG Information Day was held successfully on Oct 5; over 2000 HKDSE takers, their parents, and teachers visited the College of Science’s (CSCI) booth for the latest admission tips.

CityUHK’s UG Information Day was held successfully on Oct 5; over 2000 HKDSE takers, their parents, and teachers visited the College of Science’s (CSCI) booth for the latest admission tips. This year, for the first time, the College set up a “Science Corner” and over 500 participants had fun winning souvenirs by cracking Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics questions.

“Science Corner” attracted over 500 participants to solve Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics questions.
Professor Andy Siu (first on the right in the front row) introduced the admission requirements of GREAT. Professor Alex Wong (first from the left) and 3 GREAT students, (from left) Tasha, Hailey and Issac, also joined the info session.

At the Thematic Talk: “Science Talents for the GREAT Future”, Professor Andy Siu, Director of Flagship Programme, introduced the admission requirements of CSCI’s Flagship Programme: “Global Research Enrichment and Technopreneurship (GREAT)” undergraduate option in detail. He encouraged science lovers to join the GREAT programme and research on their interested topics.

Three current GREAT students joined Professor Siu and offered a glimpse into their busy yet fruitful study life. Issac, who finished his 6-month research internship at the University of Cambridge last summer, described his valuable learning and lab experiences as “eye-opening”. Tasha also finished her 6-month research internship, but at the University of Oxford last summer. With great help from the peers and researchers at Oxford’s laboratory, Tasha made good progress with her research project on the catalytic decomposition of plastics. Hailey attended the summer school at University of California, Berkeley.

In the same talk, Professor Alex Wong, CSCI’s Associate Dean (Outreach and Internationalisation), shared the various overseas enrichment programmes and exchange opportunities that the College provides.

Over 130 participants flocked to another info session hosted by Professor Siu in the afternoon.
Professor Dan Dai (front row, left) and Professor Jon Lo (front row, right) introduced the Computing Mathematics UG programme. An alumnus shared his experience at CityUHK in a video.

Same as last year, participants enjoyed themselves in the popular guided laboratory tours. The Chemistry tour not only introduced the delicate chemistry research equipments, but participants also learnt how CityUHK contributed to the conservation of horseshoe crabs. In the Physics lab tour, Physics students demonstrated magnetic levitation, 3D imaging, and AI image generation for pathology.

Participants joining the Chemistry Lab Tour showed interest in learning about the horseshoe crabs.
In the Physics lab tour, a secondary school student experienced magnetic levitation under guidance.
