Professor Xunli Wang Unveils the Mystery of Neutron Scattering

Professor Xunli Wang, Head and Chair Professor of the Department of Physics, delivered a talk titled “Neutron Scattering – A Giant Microscope” at CityU’s BOLD Forum.

Neutron scattering is a powerful method for materials research and technology development. Professor Wang compared it as a giant microscope. “Neutrons can reveal the structure and dynamics of a material and thus its properties, ultimately enhancing understanding of the world,” explained Professor Wang.

With the establishment of the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) in Dongguan, Hong Kong’s scientific landscape is going to be changed. CSNS is the fourth pulsed neutron source in the world. “Because of the proximity,” remarked Professor Wang, “Hong Kong’s scientific community is poised to become the biggest beneficiary of CSNS.” On top of different collaboration activities, CityU also took the initiative to establish a joint laboratory with the Chinese Academy of Sciences on Neutron Scattering and carry out a variety of cutting-edge research projects.

BOLD Forum is a series of powerful talks delivered by CityU notable professors. Each talk gives insights on an area, e.g., the development and an outlook of a discipline, sharing of great idea or personal experience, aiming to inspire the secondary school students in planning their pathways for their future.
