400 Participants Attended Distinguished Lecture on Applications of Mathematics in STEAM World

The College of Science co-organised the first lecture of the “Distinguished Lecture Series on Applications of Mathematics in STEAM World” with the Education Bureau (EDB) on 10 February 2023 and Professor Chi Hou Chan, Acting Provost and Director of State Key Laboratory of Terahertz and Millimeter Waves, was invited to deliver the lecture on “Wireless Technology”. About 400 secondary school principals, teachers and students attended the lecture on CityU campus.

In the opening remarks, Ms Edith Tse, Principal Assistant Secretary (Curriculum Support) from EDB, expressed her gratitude to the College of Science for co-organising the important lecture and to Professor Chan, in particular, for sharing his insights on wireless technology at the first lecture of the series. Professor Chun-Sing Lee, Dean of the College of Science, also extended his warm welcome to participants in his welcoming remarks. Professor Lee stressed that mathematics is the building block of science; a strong foundation in mathematics would greatly facilitate students’ learning in science, engineering and even business subjects at the university. He proudly shared the employment prospect of CityU mathematics graduates in recent years: other than the normal engineering and education-related sectors, almost half of them were employed in the finance and business sectors, reflecting diversified career paths.

Professor Chun-Sing Lee, Dean of the College of Science, pointed out that CityU mathematics graduates have diversified career paths in recent years.

In the lecture, Professor Chi Hou Chan shared how mathematics facilitates his research and its application in wireless technology. He added that mathematics provides students with precise training in logical thinking, and it applies to all students, regardless of whether they are science students or not. He also encouraged researchers to work with the industry so that the advanced technology that originated from the laboratory could be realised as products in the long run. Participants enjoyed the lecture and will look forward to joining the second one of the series in the future.

In the lecture, Professor Chi Hou Chan, Acting Provost and Director of CityU’s State Key Laboratory of Terahertz and Millimeter Waves, shared how mathematics facilitates his research and its application in wireless technology.
