COM Research Seminar: Charm: How Magnetic Personalities Shape Global Politics by Dr Julia SONNEVEND

11 Nov 2024 (Mon)

On November 8, 2024, Associate Professor Julia Sonnevend from The New School in New York delivered an online seminar titled "Charm: How Magnetic Personalities Shape Global Politics." Prof. Sonnevend, a sociologist of culture and media, focuses on the events, icons, symbols, and charismatic personalities of public life.

During the seminar, Prof. Sonnevend explored how the strategic use of charm by politicians not only enhances their relatability but also serves as a crucial tool in both domestic politics and global diplomacy. She explained that charm enables politicians to create a more personal connection with the electorate, effectively transforming political figures into symbols of familiarity and trust. This approach is amplified through media narratives that emphasize their ordinary qualities, making them appear accessible and down-to-earth. Furthermore, Prof. Sonnevend posited that charm will significantly influence the trajectory of global democracy, as political ideals are increasingly represented by media-savvy personalities. Understanding the role of charm in politics is essential for comprehending the fragile state of contemporary global politics. The event attracted about 25 PhD students and faculty members, fostering a dynamic and thought-provoking discussion.
