Advancement in intelligent maintenance techniques

Karen Lai

With “Advances in Proactive and Intelligent Maintenance Techniques” as its theme, the Technology Transfer Forum showcased CityU’s latest updates on intelligent maintenance machinery and systems to more than 170 representatives from the local business community on 13 January. The Forum was jointly organized by CityU's Technology Transfer Office and the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC).

Speakers included Professor Michael Hung and Dr Peter Tse,  Head, and Associate Professor, respectively, of CityU’s Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management (MEEM). Professor Hung explained to the audience how he applied shearography in developing building inspection technology. He introduced two recent advances, namely shearography for non-destructive inspection,
and durable stress sensors for long-term and continuous monitoring of building structures. Dr Tse talked about the Smart Ear for Effective and Cost Saving Maintenance (Smart Asset Maintenance System), a portable, user-friendly, low-cost, and versatile intelligent equipment maintenance system for equipment health monitoring. Another speaker, Mr Wilson Chung, Executive
Committee Member of the Graphic Arts Association of Hong Kong (GAAHK) presented the “Intelligent Color Printing Quality Enhancement System  for Printing Machine Maintenance & Test Form” (ICPS). The ICPS is an Innovation and Technology Fund project jointly developed by CityU and GAAHK.

“In the past two decades, CityU has placed strong emphasis on technology transfer and contributing its strengths in applied research to the advancement of society,” said Mr H Y Wong, TTO Director, at

the opening ceremony. “The success of our staff and students is also manifested by the establishment of TeleEye Holdings Ltd, the first publicly listed technology company nurtured by a local tertiary institution. We're glad today to disseminate another round of our mature technologies to the industry,” Mr Wong added.

Other officiating guests and speakers included: Dr Stephen Lee, Director, Product Productivity, HKPC; Ir Dr Greg C Y Wong, Vice President, Hong Kong Institution of Engineers; Professor Roderick Wong, Dean of Research and Graduate Studies; and Professor Jay Lee, Honorary Professor, MEEM.

Launched last year, the Technology Transfer Forum Series presents a comprehensive range of CityU's applied research output, offering a platform for technology transfer and collaboration between academics and local industry. The Series has successfully promoted the University’s research advancements in wireless communication, materials science, building technologies, and intelligent machinery and maintenance techniques.

As a bridge between the University and industrial and business communities, the TTO lines up research with consultancy services, licensing technologies, and product commercialization. By collocating the research output in this Series, CityU fosters practical and effective deployment of technology in the community.
