CityU showcases programmes in Law Fair 2003

Karen Lai

City University's School of Law presented a wide range of degree programmes at the Law Fair 2003 held in the Exhibition Centre of the China Resources Building on 15 February. CityU, the University of Hong Kong's Faculty of Law, and 17 major law firms participated in the Fair, which was a comprehensive exhibition of law-related study and career opportunities. Law firms taking part included Deacons, Clyde and Co, Stephenson Harwood and Lo, Denton Wilde Sapte, and Linklaters.

CityU's booth displayed detailed information on its law programmes, ranging from associate degree to PhD programmes. Faculty members and current students of the School of Law were on hand to answer questions. "This is a good occasion to attract secondary school leavers and professionals interested in pursuing a law degree," said Dr Stephen Hall, Associate Professor and Programme Leader of the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) (Alternative Mode). "We look for students with a good command of English and good academic results. The right candidates should be energetic, disciplined, and intellectually curious, with a keen interest in studying law and its relation to people."

A new programme offered by the School attracted interest at the Fair. The LLB (Alternative Mode) is designed to cater for the strong demand from graduates with an associate degree/higher diploma in law to obtain a LLB on a part-time basis, and to cater for people on other professional tracks who wish to pursue a law-related career. Visitors were also interested in the School's postgraduate courses on WTO law and dispute resolution and the Postgraduate Certificate in Laws. "Law is a very versatile discipline. With legal knowledge and clear thinking, our graduates are highly sought after by employers in different fields such as the civil service, corporations, and diplomatic offices," Dr Hall said. "They are not confined to legal practice."

The Fair also attracted current law students looking for information about their future career. "All the big law firms are here. It's a good opportunity to find out about their areas of practice. The information is useful in applying for summer placements and for long-term jobs," said CityU LLB students Mr Nicky Tsz and Mr Jeff Wong, who acted as CityU programme counsellors at the Fair.

Direct application for admission into CityU's School of Law associate degree and LLB programmes is open until the end of February; application for postgraduate programmes is open until the end of April.
