Get global insights at CityU Information Day New bachelor degree with Cornell University provides world-class veterinaryeducation

Secondary school students can find out more about the essence of the professional education on offer at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) – Professional, Creative, For the World, at Information Day on 15 October. An exciting development is the launch of the bachelor of veterinary medicine programme (BVM), which is one of the many academic programmes that CityU has developed in collaboration with prestigious overseas institutions.

Our students are given the opportunity to develop a global perspective and a more international learning experience through the partnerships for joint programmes that CityU has established with several world renowned universities.

The Joint Bachelor’s Degree Program between City University of Hong Kong and Columbia University offers students an international undergraduate educational experience. The program draws upon elements both traditional and innovative, combining the academic rigor of two world-renowned universities with an attention to the roles that social and cultural traditions play in a student’s intellectual formation. Students complete the undergraduate curricula of both CityU and Columbia and earn two bachelor’s degrees – one from each university.

CityU’s School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) has launched the groundbreaking BVM in collaboration with Cornell University, one of the world’s top universities. Commencing in the academic year 2017–2018, the six-year programme is modelled on the Cornell curriculum, and it aims to promote the global initiative called One Health and create new career paths for local young people.

Students can catch a taste of CityU’s veterinary education programme at Information Day through Haptic Cow training at the SVM booth. The seemingly empty fiberglass device draws on virtual touch, and enable students to carry out virtual examinations on the cow’s abdomen or reproductive tract. The organs are visible on a computer screen just like in a real medical examination. Haptic Cow training is often included in overseas veterinary colleges as part of farm animal courses.

Under the theme “Professional, Creative, For the World”, exhibition booths, admission talks and workshops will be held by the College of Business, College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, College of Science and Engineering, School of Creative Media, School of Law,  School of Energy and Environment and School of Veterinary Medicine.

Outstanding student projects will be showcased at the exhibition organised by the Office of Education Development and Gateway Education. The project teams will share their discovery and innovation journeys for a wide spectrum of inventions including a novel solution utilising genetically modified E.coli to tackle obesity, a smart walking stick for the visually impaired, and a ready-to-feed bottle that simplifies the milk preparation process for parents.

Guided tours will introduce visitors to CityU’s teaching and research facilities such as the studios in the Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre, English Language Centre, the Library and the student residence.
