CityU hosts creative media exhibition “The Age of Experience”

The exhibition “The Age of Experience” featuring 12 mix-media art works created by faculty members in the School of Creative Media (SCM) at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) will be held at the Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre (CMC) Gallery from 13 March to 22 April 2015.

This exciting media art exhibition brings together 12 emerging and established artists of international renown, including Professor Jeffrey Shaw, Dean and Chair Professor of Media Art, Professor Maurice Benayoun, Professor Jane Prophet and Professor Don Ritter, and the late Mr Julian Lee Chi-chiu, Associate Professor.

Also included are works by Dr Samson Young Kar-fai, Dr Zheng Bo, Mr Tobias Klein, Dr Lam Miu-ling and Dr Tomas Laurenzo, all of whom are assistant professors in SCM, Mr Tobias Gremmler, Visiting Associate Professor, and Mr Max Hattler, Visiting Assistant Professor.

The exhibition title is a request to discover these remarkable works and should remind us that art has to be first of all a discovery. The artworks are selected by Dr Harald Kraemer, Associate Professor in SCM.

The exhibition includes The Legible City (1991), Professor Jeffrey Shaw’s early work about an interactive bicycle tour in a virtual city environment. Another work is the installation Dance in the Mist (2014) by Dr Lam Miu-ling featuring a dancer spinning clockwise and anti-clockwise in a cloud of mist.

The French artist Professor Maurice Benayoun will present White Cube Alpha – 10 flacons with different essences of Contemporary Art, while Professor Don Ritter has taken messages from the news and created a series of provoking “Unnecessary Signages”.

The show will also present works by new faculty members such as an impressive crystal grown chandelier by Mr Tobias Klein, and Heaven and Hell, an animation of a futuristic metropolis by Mr Max Hattler.

A symposium titled “Art and Public Space” will be held alongside “The Age of Experience” on 12 March (Thursday), 10am to 5:30pm at M6094 Future Cinema Studio, L6, in the CMC.

Organised in cooperation with the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and SCM, the one-day symposium will offer insight on the change and challenge of the role of the arts in public space. Eight speakers will give lessons from history concerning current and future perspectives.

The prominent artists giving talks include Dr Gerald Bast, Rector of the University of Applied Arts, Vienna; Ms Barbara Holub and Mr Martin Krenn, lecturers at the University of Applied Arts, Vienna; Professor Maurice Benayoun, Professor Jenny Lau Kwok-wah, Professor Don Ritter, Professor Jeffrey Shaw and Dr Zheng Bo from SCM.

“The Age of Experience” will be open from 12:00 noon to 7:00pm, starting 13 March until 22 April (Monday–Sunday) with free admission. All are welcome.
