“Dances with the Green – An Art Exhibition on Northeastern New Territories” reveals relationship between humans and nature

 

A series of cultural and art programmes will be held at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) from now until the end of 2014 as part of CityU Cultural Festival to celebrate the University’s 30th anniversary.
 
The first programme “Dances with the Green – An Art Exhibition on the Northeastern New Territories” now being held at CityU’s Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre (CMC) includes exhibitions of photography, illustrations and installations, film screening, musical performance as well as workshops and seminars.
 
In the one-month art exhibition, the works of 11 photographers and illustrators titled “Style of the Northeastern New Territories that’s what we call life” will be displayed at CMC Gallery on L3 at CMC. In addition, the “Non-indigenous Lives – A four-part installation introducing artists in the Northeastern New Territories” curated by EmptySCape will be shown on L1, L3, L4 and the balcony of L9 at CMC. The installations, presenting the scenery of the northeastern New Territories and the daily life of local people from multiple angles, will help us reflect on the relationship between humans, nature and country. It also shows the artists’ concerns about the over-urbanisation of the countryside.
 
On the four Sundays (26 January and 9, 16 and 23 February 2014) during the exhibition, there will be forums, artist sharing sessions, workshops, film screening and musical performances. The programmes are mainly conducted in Cantonese with free admission. Below are some details of the programmes:
 
Forums: The forum “Who Holds the Future of Agriculture in Hong Kong?” hosted by Mr TV Yuen, an organic farmer in Fanling, will be held on 26 January. “Calculated Selection of Land Re-development in the NT” hosted by Mr Chow Sung-ming, a member of Local Research Community, and Mr Lee Siu-wah, a member of Kwu Tung North Development Concern Group, will be held on 9 February. Both forums will be held from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at M3090 Lecture Theatre 2 on L3 at CMC.
 
Workshops and Sharing Sessions: “Installation Artist Sharing” hosted by villagers Siu Pang, Cheung Kwai-choi, and Tsang Fan-hong and “Photographer Sharing: Social Justices and Photography” by Ho Ka-ho, Manson Wong, Kenny Yung and Tse Pak-chai will be held from 4:30pm to 6:30pm on 26 January and 9 February, respectively. Also, “360 Panoramic Photography Workshop and Sharing” hosted by John Choy and “Workshop: That is How I Do Sketching” by Stella So will be held from 2:00pm to 4:00pm on 16 and 23 February, respectively. The venue for all workshops and sharing sessions is M3090 Lecture Theatre 2 on L3 at CMC.
 
Film Screening: On the Sidewalk Watching, a documentary produced by Today Video Production will be screened on 26 January and The Way of Paddy by Fredie Chan on 9 February. Raging Land 3: Three Valleys, a 310-minute documentary by v-artivist, which has been selected by Japan’s Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival this year, will be shown on 16 February. Except Raging Land 3: Three Valleys that starts at 3:00pm, all other films will start at 6:45pm. Also, all films have English subtitles, except On the Sidewalk Watching. The venue is M1052 Screening Theatre on L1 at CMC.
 
Performances will be held on the closing day of 23 February. The programme “Storytelling by Uncle Hung and Villagers” will start at 4:30pm, while the concert by Mini Noise and Lung Yuen Band, a villagers’ band from Kwu Tung, will start at 6:30pm at the roof-top garden on L9 at CMC.
 
Participating artists include John Choy, Ho Ka-ho, Alfred Ko Chi-keung, Stella So, Leon Suen Shu-kwan, Tai Ngai-lung, Ducky Tse, Tse Pak-chai, Manson Wong, Yeung Hung, Kenny Yung, Cheung Kwai-choi, Jason Lam Chi-fai, Siu Pang, Rosabella Tai Sau-wai, Tsang Fan-hong, Sampson Wong Yu-hin, Chi Kee Timber Yard, and Hong Kong Urban Laboratory.
 
“Dances with the Green – An Art Exhibition on the Northeastern New Territories” will be held from 12:00 noon to 7:00pm, starting today until 23 February (closed on public holidays) with free admission. All are welcome.
