New Book from CityU Promotes Faith in Social Work

City University of Hong Kong (CityU) has held a Book Launching Ceremony for Back to Faith: The Practice of Faith in Social Work and a Sharing Forum entitled “How to Practise Faith in Social Welfare Sector?” on 2 October

The aim of the event is to enhance public awareness of social work. Social service clients, veteran social workers and academics will discuss the importance of practicing “faith” in social work during the event.

Dr Kam Ping-kwong, editor of the new book, is an Associate Professor in CityU’s Department of Applied Social Studies. He has taught social work courses for 20 years. With the aim of enhancing the faith of social workers, he invited 20 social workers, who are CityU graduates, to contribute articles that focus on their work experience and faith in social work.

Most existing books on social work focus on theories, practice or case studies, Dr Kam said, whereas his publication discusses faith. He said “faith” connotes belief and yearning, and he said he hopes to unite the strengths of CityU’s teaching staff and graduates through the book to boost social workers’ morale.

Speaking at the ceremony, Professor Way Kuo, University President, praised the contributors to the book. He said the writers were true CityU graduates because they were contributing to society and helping to build a positive image of their alma mater.

One of the contributors is Ms Fermi Wong Wai-fun, a graduate of the Department of Applied Social Studies. In 2001, she co-founded the non-governmental organisation Hong Kong Unison, which provides services and advocates policy reform for ethnic minorities in Hong Kong.

A winner of the Hong Kong 18th Outstanding Social Worker Award, Ms Wong believes social workers can continue to render dedicated professional services and realise their career aspirations as long as they uphold their faith.
