CityU achieves excellent results in the

2007-08 Competitive Earmarked Research Grant exercise

According to an announcement of the Research Grants Council (RGC) today (29 June), City University of Hong Kong (CityU) achieves excellent results in the 2007-08 Competitive Earmarked Research Grant exercise, ranked forth among the eight higher education institutions in total funding awarded, an increase of 22% from last year’s.

CityU is ranked 4th among University Grants Committee funded institutions in terms of the level of funding, with 109 projects funded at HK$60.3m; and in terms of the successful rate, at 34.3%. Compared with the last exercise, there is an increase of 11% and 22% respectively in terms of successful projects and the level of funding.

By subject panel, CityU is ranked third in terms of successful projects and level of funding in two of the four panels, namely “Engineering” and “Humanities, Social Sciences & Business Studies”. In terms of subject discipline, CityU receives the largest grant award in “Electrical & Electronic Engineering”, and second largest in “Mathematics” and “Computing Science & Information Technology”.

The excellent results reflect that CityU’s achievement in applied research is well-recognized.

Seven projects received large grants of over HK$1m – four of them from Faculty of Science and Engineering, two from Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences & Language Information Sciences Research Centre, and one from Faculty of Business. Six of these CityU projects are from the “Engineering” and “Humanities, Social Sciences & Business Studies” panels, out of only 22 large grants funded by these two panels.
