CityUHK and BIEL Crystal sign MoU to enhance industry-academia-research cooperation

City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) and BIEL Crystal signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 3 April to jointly promote the development and industrialisation of technologies in advanced manufacturing, advanced materials and artificial intelligence (AI) in manufacturing.

The MoU was signed by Professor Anderson Shum Ho-cheung, Vice-President (Research) at CityUHK, and Mr Ronald Sze, CEO of BIEL Crystal, and was witnessed by Professor Freddy Boey, CityUHK President and University Distinguished Professor, and Dr Yeung Kin-man, President of BIEL Crystal.

The MoU aims to foster collaboration in key fields, such as advanced manufacturing, advanced materials and AI in manufacturing. The two parties will share joint research results and discuss intellectual property terms on a project-by-project basis in the specific project agreements.

In his welcome speech, President Boey said, "CityUHK is delighted to sign this MoU with BIEL Crystal, creating more value in academic research and industrial application, and promoting technological and economic development in Hong Kong and beyond."

President Boey thanked Dr Yeung for his long-term support for the University, stating, "Dr Yeung has provided significant support to CityUHK over the years, including generous donations and professional guidance, which have greatly contributed to the University's development. We deeply appreciate Dr Yeung's passion for promoting education, research and innovation, as well as his deepest care for society and the next generation."

Professor Shum thanked the BIEL Crystal delegation for their visit and commended BIEL Crystal for leading Hong Kong industry and showcasing Hong Kong's strengths on the world stage. He looked forward to fostering a deeper cooperation between CityUHK and BIEL Crystal.

BIEL Crystal is a global leader in cover glass and screen manufacturing for consumer electronic products, particularly smart phones and smart watches. Dr Yeung is an Honorary Doctor of CityUHK, and Honorary Chairperson and Honorary Patron of the CityUHK Foundation. He has provided overwhelming support to CityUHK for years, contributing to the University's development and the nurturing of future talents.

After the signing ceremony, several CityUHK faculty members, including Professor Chen Mu Ku, Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Professor Dang Chuangyin, Head and Professor in the Department of Systems Engineering, Professor Chong Chee Mun, Deputy Director of the Hong Kong Institute for Clean Energy, Professor Angus Yip Hin-lap, Professor in the Department of Materials Science & Engineering, and Professor Ma Xiaolong, Assistant Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, introduced their research and discussed various topics with the delegation.

Other representatives from CityUHK included Ms Kathy Chan Yin-ling, Associate Vice-President (Development) and Secretary-General of the CityUHK Foundation, and Dr Eva Lui, Director of the Research Grants and Contracts Office.
