To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the inauguration of City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) as a university, a series of celebratory events were organised, including the CityUHK 30th Anniversary Short Video Competition, themed “Bridges to Innovation and Stories of Connection”. The prize presentation ceremony, marking the conclusion of the competition, was held on 9 December to recognise the remarkable achievements of the awardees.

Honourable guests at the ceremony included Professor Chan Chi-hou, Vice-President (Community Engagement) of CityUHK and Chairperson of the 30th Anniversary Organising Committee, Professor Alfred Ho Tat-kei, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Professor Christine Huang Yi-hui, Head and Chair Professor of the Department of Media and Communication (COM), Professor Shen Fei, Professor Dai Yue and Professor Crystal Jiang Li from COM, and judges of the competition, Ms Huang Rui and Dr Joseph Louis Travis.

Speaking at the ceremony, Professor Chan said, “We received numerous meaningful and creative short videos, illustrating how innovation and creativity play vital roles in personal development. These entries reflect our mission to nurture and develop students' talent while generating knowledge that can be applied for social and economic advancement.”

Professor Huang praised the awardees for their commendable efforts. She said that during the short film creation process, the participants demonstrated compelling storytelling skills and the ability to use the camera effectively. The entries showcased impressive creativity and team spirit, as well as their perspective of CityUHK.

Organised by COM at CityUHK, the competition featured two categories: the CityUHK Group and the Secondary School Student Group. The participants demonstrated their knowledge of CityUHK and the impact the University has had on them and their communities, adding a vibrant touch to the anniversary celebrations.

The winner of the CityUHK Group was a team comprising Mahir Labib, a Year 4 student in the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science programme, and Yeung Wan-hei, a Year 3 student in the Bachelor of Science in Creative Media programme. Their video, titled Crafting Tomorrow’s Innovators Today, showcases how CityUHK nurtures students to become creative, innovative and collaborative future talent. The video illustrates how CityUHK's advanced technology and facilities inspire students to unleash their creativity and uniqueness. Some of the clips even incorporated animation, making the visuals more engaging and dynamic.

The first runner-up of the CityUHK Group was a team of Year 4 students in the Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing programme: Chen Xinyi, Cheng Hai-ching and Lam Kwok-fung. The title of their video is A World of Connection. There were two Merit award winners: a Year 4 student, Chu Ka-wang, in the Bachelor of Arts in Digital Television and Broadcasting programme, for the video CityU COM Adventure — An Immersive News Production Journey, and Ye Yashan, a graduate from the Master of International Accounting programme, for the video Community Impact as the Inspiring Educator.

The winner of the Secondary School Student Group was a team from Ko Lui Secondary School, for the video Nurturing Dreams – Season’s Educational Journey. The female protagonist in the short video shares her dream of becoming a scientist, with the aim of changing the world through inventions and research. She shows how her current secondary school has helped her realise her dream and supports her aspiration to attend CityUHK. The judges praised the film for its rich variety of scenes, including footage of her secondary school and the CityUHK campus, as well as clips of students participating in extracurricular activities.

The first runner-up in the Secondary School Student Group was a team from St. Mary's Canossian College for their video Artificial Buddy. The second runner-up was a team from Buddhist Yip Kei Nam Memorial College for their video From "I" to "Our". Three other secondary school teams received merit awards: a team from Hong Kong University Graduate Association College, for the video How Innovation Changed My Life; a team from TWGHs Kap Yan Directors’ College, for the video Yi Xin’s Journey Embracing Change at TWGHKYDC; and a team from Lock Tao Secondary School, for the video Our View of CityUHK.

Each category offered a range of awards and prizes to encourage the teams. The winner received a cash prize HK$12,000, the first runner-up received a cash prize of HK$8,000, the second runner-up received a cash prize of HK$6,000, and the Merit awardees received a cash prize of HK$1,000. All participants will receive a certificate of participation as a token of encouragement.
