Organised by the School of Creative Media (SCM) of City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) to celebrate its 25th anniversary, the “Converging Parallels: A Celebration of SCM’s 25 Years at the Forefront of Media Art-Making” exhibition reviews the achievements of the school in nurturing creative talent and its contribution to the artistic community. Marrying art and technology, more than 20 alumni and students are showcasing their diversified talent in the form of animation, film, photography, painting, media installation, robotic art, sound installation, video art and more.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the exhibition on 12 Mar, Professor Freddy Boey, CityUHK President, said, “This year, we are not only celebrating CityUHK’s 30th anniversary; we are also commemorating the 25th anniversary of the School of Creative Media. This milestone convergence symbolises CityUHK's achievements in innovation and entrepreneurship, as well as in creative media education. Fostering innovation and entrepreneurship has always been one of the missions of CityUHK, with creativity at the heart of our enterprise.” He added that the SCM was founded to capitalise on the promise of the emerging digital technologies for the creative industries and to nurture talent in new media arts and creative technologies. Today, the SCM has become a leading institution of its kind in Hong Kong.

Professor Richard Allen, Dean of the SCM, said that the SCM spares no effort in pushing the boundaries creatively and combining art and technology. He said he is confident that the school will continue to move forward because of its artistic acumen and technological literacy.

Professor Ip Yuk-yiu, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Programmes and Academic Affairs) and co-curator of the exhibition, said that the SCM has nurtured a new generation of creative talent since its establishment in 1998. The exhibition, which showcases their creative achievements comprehensively for the first time, reveals that the SCM has not only nurtured top-notch artists; it has also trained creative professionals who excel in the cultural and creative industries.

 

 

Created by Professor Tobias Gremmler, Professor of Practice in the SCM, the video artwork Mythical Creatures – Studies of Shapes and Motions was showcased at the opening ceremony. The work, which was inspired by Chinese mythical characters, such as Hundun, Pixiu and Xiangliu, interprets the motions and forms of these characters in a contemporary way.

 

The artists represented in the exhibition are Carla Chan, Joseph Chan, Chan Hoi Tat, Chris Cheung (h0nh1m), Lilian Fu, Phoebe Hui, Vvzela Kook, Jess Lau Ching Wa, Florence Yuk-ki Lee, GayBird, Andy Li, Edwin Lo Yun Ting, Cédric Maridet, Jolene Mok, Tommy Kai Chung Ng, Eric Siu, Kachi Chan & Flyingpig, Eason Tsang Ka Wai, Haze Tsui @Tsui Brother, Kenny Wong Chi Chuen, Morgan Wong and Wu Jiaru.
