Members of the Court at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) had the opportunity to catch up with all the latest news through a number of presentations and eye-catching videos at its meeting on 22 November.

After welcoming newly appointed Court members, Dr Chung Shui-ming, Pro-Chancellor, shared that this past year had been one of the busiest that he could remember in terms of new initiatives, research breakthroughs and global recognition, adding that he was pleased to see students back on campus for face-to-face classes.

“CityU thrives on the energy of the young people who study on our programmes. I wish them all the best in their studies,” said Dr Chung, who has been re-appointed as Pro-Chancellor for another term of three years.

Council Chairman Mr Lester Garson Huang? briefed members on several areas of development, including preparatory work for the City University of Hong Kong (Dongguan) Project in the Greater Bay Area and the results of ranking activities and research success.

“More than 180 CityU faculty members are listed among the top 2% of the most cited scientists in the world in 2022, according to Stanford University,” he said.

Mr Huang also highlighted key sporting and artistic achievements, new Honorary Doctorates and Honorary Fellows, issues related to financial matters, ongoing building projects, the renewal of CityU’s University Accountability Agreement, risk management, plus environment, social, and governance issues.

“All these achievements combine to construct a very real sense of rejuvenation, one that is complemented by significant efforts to strengthen our institutional brand,” he said.

Both Dr Chung and Mr Huang asked for a vote of thanks to be recorded for President Way Kuo, expressing CityU’s deep gratitude for his long and dedicated service.

Members of the Court offered an enthusiastic show of appreciation to the President for almost two minutes

After the Pro-Chancellor detailed President Kuo's contributions to CityU over the years, members of the Court offered an enthusiastic show of appreciation for almost two minutes, prompting the President to stand three times to thank his fellow colleagues for such a warm tribute.

President Kuo then briefed the Court on the strength of CityU’s faculty and students and the prospects of even more success in winning major international awards just as Professor Alain Aspect of the Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study at CityU had won the Nobel Prize in Physics this year.

He continued that he was confident CityU would continue to figure prominently in international awards for patents and accessing research grants from mainland China.

His address was followed by short talks by Professor Michael Yang Mengsu, Vice-President (Research and Technology), on the rapid development of HK Tech 300 and Mr Sunny Lee Wai-kwong, Vice-President (Administration), on the progress of the City University of Hong Kong (Dongguan) Project.

Professor Nikolaus Osterrieder, Chair Professor in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Public Health, presented on the successful opening of CityU Farm earlier in the month, highlighting future events such as the arrival of new heifers, the first calvings, and innovations in growing feed for cattle.
