CityU alumna Ms Grace Lau Mo-sheung, a female karate specialist, will compete in the Karate Women’s Kata in the Tokyo Olympics at 9am (HKT) on 5 Aug (Thursday), vying for a medal for Hong Kong. President Way Kuo will join the staff, students and alumni to watch the live broadcast on the CityU campus and cheer together for Grace.

Now recognised as “Hong Kong's karate diva”, Grace began learning karate, boxing and taekwondo at the age of 11 and was later selected for the Hong Kong team. In 2012, she was admitted to the School of Creative Media through CityU's Student Athletes Admission Scheme, and was awarded the Dr Herman Hu Outstanding Sports Talents Scholarship. During her studies, Grace led the CityU women's karate team to clinch the gold medal in the USFHK competition and earned the honour of USFHK Sportswoman of the Year in both 2014 and 2015.

Subsequently, Grace represented Hong Kong as a full-time athlete to take part in various international tournaments. In August 2018, Grace made her debut in the Asian Games, where she won the bronze medal in the karate women's individual kata, becoming the first Hong Kong athlete to win a medal in the event. In November of the same year, she won a bronze medal at the World Karate Championships, marking another first for Hong Kong. In 2020, she ranked 4th in the Karate 1 Premier League, which granted her an entry ticket to the Tokyo Olympics.

CityU was the first university in Hong Kong to introduce and practice the concept of One Health. In the sports leagues in which 13 tertiary education institutions in Hong Kong participated in the past 15 years, CityU won seven out of 11 championships. In addition, President Kuo has led CityU staff, students and alumni to participate in the Standard Chartered Marathon every year it has been run since 2008.
