Biotechnology experts from City University of Hong Kong (CityU) held talks in Beijing on pursuing greater collaboration in research and knowledge transfer during a visit from 24 to 25 January. 

The seven-person CityU delegation was led by Professor Way Kuo, University President.

CityU became the first local university to visit the Beijing municipal government since the move to Tongzhou District when the delegation met Mr Chen Jining, Mayor of Beijing, on 25 January. 

Discussions focused on collaboration on a research institute for biotechnology and One Health. Other topics included technology innovation, medicine and health, the exchange of international experts, food safety and big data. 

Delegates also talked to Mr Xu Qiang, Director General of the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission, about implementing the collaboration plans discussed by Mr Chen and President Kuo, and exploring ideas for a research institute. 

On 24 January, the CityU delegation attended the plaque unveiling and agreement signing ceremony with Beijing Shuanggao Future Technology Services Company Limited ( Shuanggao Future) in Changping District. 

In his remarks at the ceremony, President Kuo praised Mrs Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administration Region, for supporting technology innovation. 

He presented CityU’s achievements in innovation for teaching and research, particularly through its collaboration with Cornell University in the US on the first college of veterinary medicine and life sciences in Hong Kong. He also talked about CityU’s excellent faculty. 

In addition, the CityU Shenzhen Research Institute signed an agreement with Shuanggao Future for collaboration on technology transfer; and Professor Kuo joined Mr Liu Minhua, Deputy Director of the Beijing Talent Employment Bureau, to unveil a plaque for the International Technology Transfer Centre. 

Last but not least, the CityU delegation explored the possibility of collaboration on research into life sciences and veterinary medicine during a meeting with the management of Beijing Future Science Park where the CityU delegates also met with a range of corporations.
