A HK$3 million donation from the Tan Siu Lin Foundation will sponsor undergraduates on non-local exchange programmes. The Foundation was set up by Dr Tan Siu Lin, SBS, the founder and Honorary Life Chairman of Luen Thai Group Limited.

Professor Way Kuo, CityU President, thanked Dr Tan for his generous donation, which will be used to establish an endowment fund, and for his support over the years.

“CityU emphasises student development, and exchange is an effective way to broaden students’ horizons,” Professor Kuo said. “We had 50% of students join non-local exchange programmes two years ago. Now the ratio has increased to nearly 65%. The donation is of great help to our students.”

Guests attending the cheque donation ceremony at CityU on 6 November included Dr Henry Tan, BBS, JP, Vice-Chairman of Tan Siu Lin Foundation and Chief Executive Officer of Luen Thai Group Limited; Mr Sunny Tan, Executive Vice President of Luen Thai Holdings Limited; Mrs Rosalina Tan; Professor Matthew Lee Kwok-on, Vice-President (Development and External Relations) of CityU; Ms Kathy Chan Yin-ling, Associate Vice-President (Development & Alumni Relations) of CityU; and Mr Gavin Kwok Man-kit, Director of Development of CityU.

Two students who received sponsorship from Tan Siu Lin Foundation shared their thoughts at the ceremony. Christian Moy Wing-ting, a fresh graduate of CityU’s Department of English, went to the University of Oklahoma in the US for an exchange last year. She had a deep impression about American students’ independent learning attitude and she made friends with students from different places.

“It was the first time that I experienced living in another country. I became more independent and more confident about myself. The trip left me with fond memories and enhanced my life experience,” she said.

Sam Chan Chung-ming, a Year 4 student in CityU’s Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences, will go to National Taipei University in Taiwan for an exchange. “I am grateful to the Tan Siu Lin Foundation for the sponsorship. My family's economic condition is not good, but the sponsorship enabled me to join the Taiwan exchange programme and thus broaden my views and prepare myself for my future career without worrying about funds,” he said.
