City University of Hong Kong (CityU) signed an agreement with China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN) and Tsinghua University on 17 December that will see all parties working together to develop professionals in energy technology and collaborating on scientific research.

Professor Way Kuo, CityU President, Mr Shi Bing, Senior Vice President of CGN, and Professor Cheng Jianping, Executive Vice President of Tsinghua University, signed the agreement for this strategic partnership at a ceremony held in Shenzhen.

Based on their respective strengths, CityU and Tsinghua University will develop programmes for undergraduates and master’s degree and doctoral degree students in energy engineering. The two universities will also collaborate on a wide range of energy and environmental research projects, particularly those that focus on energy safety and reliability as well as green energy. CGN is willing to provide funding for research and training opportunities for students.

At the ceremony, Professor Kuo said that training nuclear technology professionals is the key to guarantee the safety of the fast-developing nuclear power sector in China. CityU has been providing education in related disciplines and conducting research in green energy, and established the first School of Energy and Environment in Hong Kong in 2009.

Guests attending the ceremony included Professor Kai Ji-jung, Chair Professor of Nuclear Engineering at CityU’s Department of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering (MBE), Professor Chieng Ching-chang, Visiting Professor of MBE, Dr Luk Bing-lam, MBE Senior Engineer, and senior management from Tsinghua University, CGN, China Nuclear Power Technology Research Institute, and CGNPC Uranium Resources Co., Ltd.
