Digitising one million pages of e-material boosts scholarly exchange

Yvonne Lee

An opening ceremony for Hong Kong Cooperation Centre of China Academic Digital Associative Library (CADAL) was held at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) on 27 March. Officiating at the ceremony were Academician Pan Yunhe (third from right), project owner of CADAL and Executive Vice-President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Professor Way Kuo (second from left), CityU President.

With the launch of CADAL, CityU will coordinate with local academic and research institutes to introduce a six-month pilot scheme to convert one million pages of materials, including books, periodicals, magazines, newspapers, dissertations, photos and covenants, into digitised format. The objective of the project is to enhance academic exchange between Hong Kong and the mainland and to promote the dissemination of knowledge through the sharing of resources.

At the opening ceremony, Professor Pan presented one million e-books to Professor Arthur Ellis (first from left), CityU Provost, as a gift for the CityU library. In return, Professor Ellis donated 300,000 pages of electronic material for the CADAL project to Professor Pan.
