Connie Ng

?Secondary school students can find out more about the Discovery-enriched Curriculum, the campus environment and university life at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) at Information Day on 20 October. Over 100 briefing sessions, campus and facilities tours, and workshops will be held. In addition, business leaders from various sectors and outstanding CityU alumni will share information with students about the workplace and the latest development of different industries.

Interesting and interactive exhibitions, demonstrations and seminars will help students understand CityU’s Gateway Education (GE) courses and promote the “Discover&Innovate@CityU” and interdisciplinary approach to education and research at City, as well as promote critical thinking skills and innovative mindsets. Included in these events will be demonstrations of robot technology and the scientific concepts of kung fu.

Students can also visit an innovative art exhibition titled “Pure Land II: Inside the Mogao Grottoes at Dunhuang” organised by CityU’s School of Creative Media (SCM). The exhibition integrates augmented reality with mobile media technology. Visitors need only to walk with a tablet computer in hand in the exhibition hall to feel as if they are inside Cave 220 of the Mogao Grottoes and appreciate the magnificent Buddhist wall paintings created by 3D technologies. The first of its kind in the world, the exhibition displays virtual images of cultural heritage in their actual size.

In addition, Professor Tamás Pal Waliczky of SCM, the winner of numerous international awards, will host talks on the art of animation and working in the industry as well as present an animation screening.

CityU’s Admissions Office will arrange briefing sessions on different topics for parents and students. Mr Alex Tham Koy-siong, Senior Coordinator (Admissions) in the Office of the Provost, will discuss how he helped more than 1,000 students plan their studies over the past 10 years, advising them on making their JUPAS choices and offering tips on preparing for the admission interviews. Meanwhile, Professor Dennis Wong Sing-wing, Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, will suggest how parents can help their children enter university. His talk is titled “Parents’ role in children’s life plan”. Parents interested in attending may register online. (http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ParentsTalks).

They will talk from their experience, the different types of jobs and the latest developments in different industries. These talks will provide students with valuable information when they choose their academic programmes.

The six colleges and schools of CityU will organise about 100 briefing sessions and exhibitions to introduce the University’s academic programmes. CityU student ambassadors will share their experience with visiting secondary school students on features and requirements of the different academic programmes and professions to help them make their choices in the JUPAS application. In addition, more than 60 guided tours will be arranged for visitors to see CityU’s state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities such as the studios and digital media teaching facilities in the Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre, Innovation Centre, Data Communication Laboratory, and the Library. Visitors can also drop by the student hostel to experience university life and the learning environment at CityU in a broader context.
