Joan Yip

The winners of the University Logo Design Competition were announced at the award presentation ceremony held on 9 October. The competition had a very encouraging response. Over 180 submissions coming from students, staff and alumni were received.

The Competition aims to enable the entire campus community to participate in the University’s pursuit of a fresh visual identity (University logo), one that encompasses our aspirations to become a global university excelling in research and professional education.

Javee Lam Pui-yeung
, a year 1 student in the Division of Building Science and Technology, was the overall winner. His winning design incorporates the concept of the infinity sign, representing the idea of vision, horizons, discovery and the pioneering spirit.

“My design highlights the importance of a continuous pursuit of discovery and knowledge creation. I wanted to create a design that was three-dimensional, modern-looking and dynamic,” Javee Lam said.

Dr Joseph Lee Chung-tak, Council member and Chairman of the judging panel, said important transformations are taking place at CityU. To maintain the momentum of success, the University is exploring new promotion opportunities. Now, it is time to establish for CityU a new visual identity, one that sharply outlines our ideals and aspirations.

"Although it is by no means certain that this pursuit would lead to a new logo for CityU, enthusiastic participation from the CityU members was vital to the University’s continuous efforts to explore new promotion opportunities," Dr Lee said.

The panel of adjudicators also included Ms Shirley Chan Suk-ling, Council member, Professor Julia Tao Lai Po-wah, Chief-of-Staff, Professor Christian Wagner, Associate Provost (Quality Assurance), Professor Matthew Lee Kwok-on, Director of the Communications and Public Relations Office, and Dr Andy Chun Hon-wai, Chief Information Officer.

The primary criteria for the judging panel were whether the design was able to reflect CityU’s spirit and characteristics. Also considered was whether the logo was eye catching, attractive and easy to remember.

The competition was supported by the City University of Hong Kong Students’ Union.
