The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) hosted a study tour for overseas secondary school students for the first time.

A group of 14 pupils from Sutton in southern England experienced university life in Hong Kong during a one-week sojourn on campus.

The trip, which ended on 21 July, not only gave future UK applicants to CityU valuable insights into our university, but also provided CityU students with rich opportunities for cultural exchange and a unique chance to broaden their global outlook, according to Professor Gregory Lee, Dean of the College.

Professor Lee, who initiated the project, said such exchanges boosted internationalisation efforts on campus and proved highly popular with both the local and overseas students.

The British students who hailed from six schools in Sutton were greeted by Professor Arthur Ellis, Provost, and Professor Paul Lam Kwan-sing, Vice-President (Student Affairs), before they visited different departments within the College and learned about the spread of studying opportunities at CityU.

Guided by local CityU students, they toured major facilities on campus including the new Hong Kong Advanced Institute for Cross-Disciplinary Studies, the first trans-disciplinary research institute in Hong Kong, and the cutting-edge media and communication laboratories. They also sat in on classes and lodged at the student residence.

“The facilities at CityU, particularly the media and communication laboratories, are really amazing,” said Maurizio Parker from Overton Grange School on his first trip to Hong Kong. He added that the cultural exchanges with local students had been very memorable: “I would definitely choose CityU if I finally choose media and communication studies.”
