Broadening creativity through literary writing

Ellen Chan

The prize presentation ceremony for the 6th City Literary Awards hosted by City University of Hong Kong (CityU) was held on 18 May. Lam Kin-ping, a Year 3 student in the Department of Media and Communication, won the second runner-up in the prose category, winning praises from the adjudicators.

Professor Cheng Pei-kai, Chairman of CityU’s Cultural and Sports Committee and Director of the Chinese Civilisation Centre, said the City Literary Awards encourage young people in Hong Kong and Macau to express themselves through creative writing.

This year’s theme “Hong Kong Cityscape embraced in Mountains and Seas” explores the close ties between people’s lifestyles in Hong Kong with urban and natural landscapes, attracting 354 entries in the categories of prose, short stories, poetry, and art and cultural criticism.

The competition forms part of the City Literary Festival during which several well-known local and overseas writers discussed their writing experience at seminars in Hong Kong and Macau.

The event was organised by the Cultural and Sports Committee, Chinese Civilisation Centre and CityU’s Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics. The Hong Kong Arts Development Council and Macao Foundation were the co-organisers; Hang Seng Bank was the sponsor.
