Secondary school students taste spirit of innovation and discovery at CityU

More than 130 secondary school students took part in a special programme aimed at introducing select secondary school students to the learning environment at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) on 15 November. The main theme running through the event was “Discovery and Innovation: Tasting the Life of CityU”.

The day-long visit included a meeting with The Hon Leung Chun-ying, Chairman of CityU Council, and Professor Way Kuo, University President, plus attendance at the University’s 2010 Congregation.

The aim of this new initiative, titled “Life as a City University Student: An Early Learning Experience for Secondary School Students,” was to enhance secondary school students’ understanding of the University and strengthen connections with the local community.

During the meeting, Mr Leung encouraged the visiting students to equip themselves fully for the future, advising them that Hong Kong was an intense and highly competitive working environment.

“Innovation is imperative, which is why CityU provides students with a learning environment that encourages new ideas,” Mr Leung said.

Mr Leung said CityU actively promotes innovation in its teaching and research, citing as an example the School of Energy and Environment. The first of its kind in Hong Kong and one of the few in the region, the School responds to two of the most pressing issues of our times. CityU is also consolidating Hong Kong’s position as an international transportation hub through the Hong Kong Centre for Maritime and Transportation Law.

Both students and universities should search for fresh ideas and adapt to the development of society, Mr Leung added.

Professor Kuo told the students that the history of the human race is defined by its never-ending quest to solve problems and overcome challenges. It is a record of how we search for answers and develop innovative ideas.

“Universities in the 21st century should be a place for nurturing new talent and encouraging young people to explore new ideas and knowledge. CityU is committed to this direction,” Professor Kuo said.

The visitors also attended a presentation on CityU by Professor Paul Lam Kwan-sing, Vice-President (Student Affairs), visited teaching and research facilities, attended Congregation and chatted with alumni from their secondary schools who are studying at CityU.
