Student building projects feature creative design and advanced technology

Karen Cheng

More than 100 final year projects demonstrating the professional skills and creativity of students on design and building technology are being displayed at BuiltExpo 2010 held on 16-17 April at City University of Hong Kong (CityU).

An annual event organised by the Division of Building Science and Technology (BST), BuiltExpo 2010 aims to kindle through the student projects the awareness of advances in design development and building technology both in Hong Kong and internationally, to meet rising societal expectations. Opening the Expo on 16 April were Mr Yau Shing-mu, Under Secretary for Transport and Housing, HKSAR, Professor Chan Chi-hou, Acting Provost, CityU, and Dr Paul Ho Hok-keung, Head of BST, CityU.

Under the theme “Advancement in Design and Building”, BST students from architectural studies, building services engineering, construction engineering and management, and surveying worked on projects that challenged their technical as well as professional skills, such as critical thinking, problem solving, communication and team work. These projects included the revitalisation of a factory building into either a hypermarket or research centre, the conversion of industrial or commercial buildings incorporating the use of renewable energy and environmentally friendly materials, and innovative design of a high-rise office building.
