CityU community artworks showcase creative talent

Sharon Ng

The usually quiet Run Run Shaw Library was bustling with people and a rich sense of art at the opening of the Exhibition of Art Works by Members of CityU Community on 6 March, which was jointly hosted by the Run Run Shaw Library and Human Resources Office. The exhibition clearly reflects the CityU community members’ enthusiasm in arts.

Over 50 art works are on display, including paintings, calligraphy, sketches, glass works and photographs. The exhibition is a sequel to an exhibition of art works by CityU staff and their family members jointly hosted by the Library and Human Resources Office in 2006.

The opening day programme started with a sharing session on the experience of creating art, moderated by Professor Chair Zhang Longxi from the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics.

Acting President Professor Richard Ho Yan-ki was among the contributors to the exhibition who shared their experience. He said: “The process of creating art works can sometimes be very difficult. During the process, we may experience the same ups and downs as in our life and we may feel frustrated when we are stuck in a dead end.” However, we felt a sense of gratification when we finally completed a piece of art work, he added.

Mr Sunny Wong, Senior Technician in the Communications Office, said taking photographs was his hobby as well as his profession. In his job as the University’s photographer, he enjoyed the chance to present a view from his chosen angle.

Mr Raymond W M Wong, Lecturer in the Division of Building Science and Technology, said one must have a passion for art in order to create a touching work. Mr Rodolfo S Canete Jr, Assistant Computer Officer in the Department of English and Communication, said art allowed people’s mind to travel beyond the boundaries of daily life and religious beliefs.

Other contributors to the exhibition included Professor Cheng Pei-kai, Director of Chinese Civilisation Centre; Lady Ivy Wu, spouse of Sir Gordon Wu, CityU honorary Doctor of Social Science; and staff of the Library and Facilities Management Office and their family members.

The sharing session was followed by an opening ceremony for the exhibition. The officiating guests were Professor Ho; Dr Yu Jer-tsang, Chief Information Officer; Dr Ellen Ko Law Yin-lan, Vice-President (Administration); Mrs Eva Ng Li Yee-wah, Acting Director of Human Resources; and Professor Steve Ching Hsianghoo, University Librarian.

The Exhibition of Art Works by Members of the CityU Community is being held at the new Learning Commons of Run Run Shaw Library until 31 March. For details of the exhibition, please visit the following website: http://www.pd4n48r.xyz/lib/about/event/ex_cityu_art/index.htm
