Championship proves students' presentation skills

A team of five students from City University's Department of Public and Social Administration showcased their wit and skills in a presentation about transport and logistics and walked away with the championship, beating six other teams.

The students took part in the annual Student Day, organized by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), which gives students in transport studies a chance to benchmark what they have learned against their peers from local post-secondary institutions. The winners were Mr Angus Lam Wai-mau, Mr Turbo Lau Chung-wai, Ms Diana Leung Tik-yan, Ms Ivy Lo Ho-wai and Mr Dennis Yip Chak-hung, all from the transport stream of the BA (Hons) Public and Social Administration programme.

The format of the competition varies from year to year. This year, the participating teams were given 90 minutes to prepare a case study and presentation on a current transport- or logistics-related topic.

"As we did not know the topic beforehand, the team prepared for the competition by collecting information on all major transport and logistics issues," said their coach, Dr Rebecca Kwok, Instructor in the Department. "I also selected several case studies for them to rehearse."

On the day of the competition, the CityU team was assigned the topic on the construction of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. Their presentation skills, professional knowledge, analytical power and team spirit, which were highly commended by the judges, won them the championship, said Dr Kwok.

"Our coach taught us the importance of the division of labour and helped us strengthen our analytical and presentations skills," said Ms Leung, the team leader. "The award is a great boost to our self-confidence."

This year, a total of seven teams from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Baptist University, the Hong Kong Institutes of Vocational Education (Tsing Yi, Tuen Mun), the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and CityU, took part in the contest.

CityU participated in the event for the first time last year and won the first runner-up in the contest, which took the form of a quiz.
