| Senior appointments
Professor Chan Chi-hou and Professor (Chair)
Luk Kwai-man, currently Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering
and Head of the Department of Electronic Engineering respectively, have
been re-appointed to serve another term of office from 1 August 2007 to
31 July 2010. Dr Louis Ma Chee-keung, Associate Professor
in the Department of Information Systems, will serve as Acting Head of
the Department of Information Systems from 16 July 2007 to 31 March 2008.
Mr Fung Siu-man, currently Associate Director of the
Campus Planning Office, will serve as Acting Director of Campus Planning
from 24 July 2007 until further notice.

appointments
Professor Anthony Cheung Bing-leung of the Department
of Public and Social Administration has been appointed by the government
as Chairman of the Consumer Council for two years with effect from 13
July 2007. Professor Cheung has served as a member on the Consumer Council
since 1 January 2002. He was reappointed a non-official Executive Council
member by the government, effective from 1 July 2007. Meanwhile, Dr
Arthur McInnis, Senior Teaching Fellow in the School of Law,
has been appointed by the HKSAR Government as a Member of the Board of
Review (Inland Revenue Ordinance) for a term of three years with effect
from 1 July 2007.

| Applied
Research Grant results
The University's Working Group on Applied R&D has approved five projects
for the Applied Research Grant 2006-07 at a total of $4.86m, of which
$680,000 comes from industrial sponsorship. The projects are led by Professor
(Chair) Paul Chu Kim-ho in the Department of Physics and Materials
Science; Professor Michael Yang Mengsu in the Department
of Biology and Chemistry; Dr Leung Shu-hung and Dr
Po Lai-man in the Department of Electronic Engineering; and Professor
(Chair) Benjamin T'sou Ka-yin in the Language Information Sciences
Research Centre.

| Research
centre honoured by Shenzhen Municipal Government
The City University of Hong Kong Shenzhen Research Institute (Biotech
and Health Centre), led by Professor Michael Yang Mengsu
in the Department of Biology and Chemistry, has been honoured by the Shenzhen
Municipal Government. The centre will receive the 2006 Shenzhen Municipal
Research and Technology Innovation Award in appreciation for the innovative
researchers' hard work and contributions to the technological advancement
of Shenzhen society.

| Outreach
activities for secondary school students
The University not only educates university students but also contributes
to the community by organizing a series of summer educational activities
for secondary school students. The annual Science and Engineering Fun
Days will be held from 25 July to 27 July. Organized by the Faculty of
Science and Engineering, the programme gives secondary students a glimpse
of practical and interesting facets of scientific knowledge through a
range of talks and experiments on special topics.
The Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics,
commissioned by the Support Measures for the Exceptionally Gifted Students
Scheme, will organize Linguistics Fun Days 2007 from 30 July to 1 August.
The three-day event will provide systematic exposure to human languages,
with lectures, workshops and training activities/practices in solving
problems designed to meet the needs and attributes of gifted secondary
school students.

| CityU sports
stars to represent Hong Kong
Fourteen CityU sports stars will represent Hong Kong to compete with other
university students from around the world. Li Wai-lam,
representing the athletics team; and Choi Wai-man, Ho
Shan-shan, Leung Wing-man, Wu Nga-hin
and Ng Fung-kei, representing the women's volleyball
team, will participate in the 8th Universities Games of the People's Republic
of China in Guangzhou from 12 July to 29 July. Lau Yu-leong,
Li Wing-ho, Chan Tak-kin, Li
Yuen-ching, Wu Siu-cheung, Luk Wai-lung,
Chan Yat-sing and Li Sze-hau, representing
the athletics, swimming, badminton, table tennis, fencing and taekwondo
teams respectively, will take part in the 24th Universiade Bangkok 2007
in Thailand from 8 August to 18 August.

| New CityU
Press titles at Hong Kong
Book Fair CityU Press will present more than 110 titles at the annual
Hong Kong Book Fair to be held from 18 July to 24 July. Its publication
China: Five Thousand Years of History and Civilization has been
selected as one of the 60 recommended titles of the Book Fair. The Press
will launch a range of professional titles, namely A New Introduction
to Chinese Law (in Chinese), Hong Kong Auditing (Second Edition), My Favorite
Idols, Your Die-hard FansThe study of Adolescent Idol Worship (in Chinese)
and ESL/EFL Cases: Context for Teacher Professional Discussions.
Three more new Chinese titles will also be presented at the Book Fair.
The CityU booths are located at 1H34, 1H36, 1H38, the University Square,
the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

| Art exhibition
"The Works of Shum Ping" exhibition is on display at the CityU
Gallery until 19 August. Organized by the Chinese Civilisation Centre
(CCIV), the exhibition showcases over 60 watercolour paintings, sketches
and oil paintings by Mr Shum Ping featuring various aspects
of Hong Kong. The exhibition was kicked off on 13 July by the artist;
Professor Pan Yonghua, Director General of the Education,
Science and Technology Department, Liaison Office of the Central People's
Government in the HKSAR; and Professor Cheng Pei-kai,
Director of the CCIV.
