New VP Administration
CityU is faced with several challenges over the next few years and needs excellent leadership to ensure smooth progress in, for example, the new four-year curriculum and campus development, including the three new buildings. The University is thus fortunate that Dr Ellen Ko Law Yin-lan has been appointed Vice-President (Administration) with immediate effect for a period of two years. Dr Ko, who has been balancing the dual roles of Director of Human Resources and Acting Vice-President (Administration) since April, has a vast amount of experience at CityU, having notched up 20 years of service in a career that has embraced positions in various administrative departments, schools and faculties, including the President's Office. She had been the Director of Human Resources since 2002.

New programmes for 2007 entry
CityU strives to introduce innovative programmes that serve the best interests of the local and regional community and facilitate students' transformation into professionals. For 2007 entry, there are seven new taught postgraduate and bachelor's degree programmes, which are either Government-funded or self-financing, each one reflecting growing needs in the workplace and providing vital training for our students.

International conference
CityU experts in the Faculty of Business play a prominent role researching the economies of the region, making the University a hub for economic issues and topics related to the region and mainland China. To further promote this aspect of the University's mission, the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) Study Centre in CityU's Faculty of Business is organizing the inaugural All China Economics (ACE) International Conference. Professor Matthew Lee Kwok-on, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Business, will give the Welcoming Address; Professor Bharat Hazari, Visiting Professor in the Department of Economics and Finance, will deliver one of the keynote addresses; and more than 20 CityU researchers will be leading talks that foster exchanges among scholars and professionals from key universities, governments, and financial and research institutions around the world on issues that concern China and the APEC community. The Conference, which will take place from 18 to 20 December, is sponsored by the Education and Manpower Bureau. Mr Frederick Ma Si-hang, Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, will be an Honorary Guest Speaker.

Underwater Robot Challenge expands
Encouraging greater interest in marine conservation and transferring knowledge about key state-of-the-art technology are the twin reasons behind expanding participation in the coming Hong Kong Underwater Robot Challenge to include students from universities and colleges. Previously, the Challenge, which is organized by WWF and CityU, targeted secondary school students. The competition will be in April 2007, and the winners have the chance to take part in the international finals which will take place in Canada later in the year, subject to the availability of sponsorship.

Best paper awards
Dr Lo Hing-po, Head of the Department of Management Sciences, and Mr Regan Lam, Instructor in the Department of Marketing, have won two awards at the Australian and New Zealand Marketing Academy (ANZMAC) 2006 Conference which was held in Brisbane earlier this month. Their paper, titled "Trade-offs in cognitive and affective components of business customer loyalty", was awarded the Overall Best Paper as well as the Best Paper in the Consumer Behaviour (Studies and Fieldwork) track. The ANZMAC Conference aims to foster exchanges on issues relating to marketing practices.

External appointment
Professor Peter Malanczuk, Dean of the School of Law, has been re-appointed to the Telecommunications (Competition Provision) Appeal Board for a period of two years with effect from 1 November 2006.
