| CityU surges
up global social science and technology rankings
The drive towards improving the University's international standing among
the world's most prestigious educational institutions has received another
boost. According to the Times Higher Education Supplement (THES), CityU
has jumped 40 places to 53rd this year in the world's top social science
universities, and has risen five places to 85th in the world's top technology
institutions. In October this year, THES released the rankings of the
world's top 200 universities, in which CityU was ranked 154th, compared
to 178th last year. The ranking is based on the results of a survey of
more than 3,703 academics, using peer review (40%), graduate employability
(10%), an international outlook (10%), teaching quality (20%) and research
quality (20%) as the criteria.

Congregation
This year 9,177 awards, ranging from associate degrees through to PhDs,
will be conferred on CityU students. One of the many highlights will be
the honorary doctoral degrees to be presented by the Honourable
Donald Tsang Yam-kuen, Chief Executive, HKSAR, and Chancellor
of CityU. This year's honorary awardees will be Mr Liu Changle,
Mr Xu Guanhua and Professor Rosie Young Tse-tse
in recognition of their significant contributions to learning and the
well being of society. Mr Liu, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of
Phoenix Satellite Television Holdings Ltd, will receive an Honorary Doctor
of Letters; Mr Xu, Minister of Science and Technology of China, will receive
an Honorary Doctor of Science; and Professor Young, an honorary professor
in medicine at the University of Hong Kong, will receive an Honorary Doctor
of Science. 2006 Congregation runs from 9 and 17 November in Chan Tai
Ho Multi-purpose Hall, and the ceremony for the honorary doctoral degrees
will take place on 15 November.

| Long-serving staff honoured
CityU prides itself on the loyalty of its staff, acknowledging that achievements
such as CityU's recent rise in world university rankings are due to the
dedicated service of many committed colleagues. At a ceremony on 1 November
organized by the Human Resources Office, over 1,200 members of staff who
have worked at CityU for between 10 and 20 years were honoured, while
33 staff members who have notched up more than 20 years of service were
presented with their awards by Professor H K Chang, University
President.

| A+++ Scholarship
Scheme Presentation Ceremony
Twenty-eight Year 1 students who achieved outstanding HKALE results this
year are set to become the first beneficiaries of CityU's new A+++ Scholarship
Scheme. Launched in May 2006, the Scheme helps nurture talented students
through the provision of entrance scholarships, student exchange scholarships
and residence scholarships with the aim to provide students with a professional
education and a holistic learning experience within an internationalized
context. The Presentation Ceremony will take place on 7 November.

| Honorary doctorate for
head of SCOPE
De Montfort University in the UK conferred an Honorary
Doctor of Education on Mr Charles Wong Kit-hung, Director
of the School of Continuing and Professional Education at CityU, on 18
October for his outstanding achievements in continuing education.

| EE wins grant for clean
energy project
The Department of Electronic Engineering (EE) was awarded
a grant by the Hongkong Electric Clean Energy Fund to support a project
on wave energy. The project is being led by Professor Yeung Lam-fat
of the Department of Electronic Engineering and will provide invaluable
information about the feasibility of applying renewable energy in Hong
Kong and serve as an education item for non-solar forms of energy. The
project will be based at the WWF Hong Kong Hoi Ha Wan Marine Life Centre
in Sai Kung.

| Awards at 8th China Hi-Tech
Fair
CityU won the Outstanding Organizations Award for the
fourth year running at the 8th China Hi-Tech Fair, which was held from
12 to 17 October in Shenzhen. In addition, the University was one of 26
exhibitors, and the only representative from Hong Kong, under the "Provinces,
cities and tertiary institutions" section to win the Outstanding
Exhibitors Award. This was the first time CityU won this latter award.

| Web Care awards enhance
online access
The websites of the Department of Computer Science
and the Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management
have been rated "excellent" in the Web Care Awards 2006, part
of the e-Inclusion Campaign organized by the Internet Professional Association
to make web sites more accessible. Out of the 13 organizations in Hong
Kong rated "excellent" this year, CityU was the only representative
from the tertiary sector.

| Success at 5th Business
Plan Competition
Four students from the Faculty of Business brought
home the Silver Prize at the 5th Business Plan Competition, which was
held in Jinan, Shandong province, on the mainland in mid-October. The
award-winning contribution targeted service quality and efficiency in
two- to three-star hotels on the mainland. It was devised by Cyril
Chen Yun-kai and Jay Qiu Jie, Year 2 students
in the Departments of Accountancy and Information Systems respectively,
and Vincent Lau Tsz-hin and Mike Tang Kwok-ho,
Year 3 students in the Department of Marketing.

| Paper collage mixed media
paintings
CityU Gallery is showcasing the work of a prominent
artist Mr Mui Chong-ki at an exhibition entitled "MemoriesPaper
collage mixed media paintings by Mui Chong-ki". The exhibition, which
features about 50 works of art depicting Hong Kong and Macau, runs from
2 November 2006 to 1 January 2007.
