| CityU recruits high quality local and non-local students The average score of new students admitted to CityU through the Joint University Programmes Admissions System rose 6.5%,the most improved results out of the seven local universities. The average score is 11.01, up 6.5% compared to last year's 10.34, or a surge of 14.2% over the average of 9.64 in 2002. There are 28 candidates with scores of 16 or 18 admitted this year, 10 who attained one A and one B in Hong Kong Advanced Level. These 28 students received Grade C or above in the Use of English or Chinese Language and Culture subjects and will be offered "A+++ Scholarships", launched by CityU this year. In addition, the quality and quantity of new students joining CityU through the National Joint College Entrance Examination Scheme from the mainland are significantly higher than last year. Altogether CityU admitted 210 students from 20 provinces through the Scheme, compared to 193 from 17 provinces last year, when CityU first joined. Thirty-three percent of the newly admitted have scored 100 above the Band One baseline for admission to top ranking universities on the mainland, and the majority scored well above that baseline. Candidates from Sichuan, Chongqing, Hunan, Guangxi, Yunnan, Fujian, Hainan and Hubei are the top 0.5% performers in their respective provinces/cities. Three single-subject champions have been admittedtwo in Mathematics, from Beijing and Zhejiang, and the top student in English from Foshan. In fact, all newly admitted candidates have scored an average of 129 in English, higher than last year's average of 124.

The University is preparing to welcome a new batch of students this year. A range of orientation programmes will be organized by Student Development Services and faculties/schools/units to help students adapt to their new life at CityU. The University Welcoming Ceremony will be held from 29 to 31 August in the Chan Tai Ho Multipurpose Hall, followed by faculty/schools orientation activities. Under the banner "Join us and be professionals," CityU has launched a website for Student Orientation 2006 detailing information for new students that facilitates the transition from secondary to tertiary education. The website contains a welcoming message from Professor H K Chang, CityU President, plus a list of key dates, procedures for enrolment and information for international and non-local students. To support new staff, the University is hosting an extensive two-day Faculty Orientation Programme on 17 and 18 August. Senior University officers, teaching and administrative staff, and students will ensure new staff members receive a thorough orientation, learning about CityU's vision, mission, recent achievements, future challenges and major projects. |

CityUTeens, the first online magazine in the Hong Kong tertiary education sector custom-made for teenagers studying in local secondary schools, was launched on 18 July with the aim of introducing the latest developments about CityU and campus life. The response has been very encouraging thus far with several members of staff volunteering to contribute to future editions and the number of hits and subscribers proving highly satisfactory. | Siemens MEEM technology workshop In keeping with CityU's drive to spread knowledge about the application of cutting-edge technology, Form 4 to Form 7 students interested in learning about robot technology, Radio Frequency Identification Technology, logistics and engineering management can acquire hands-on experience, attend lectures, visit companies and enter a major competition during the Siemens MEEM Technology Workshop 2006. The four-day event, from 14 to 17 August to be held on campus, is sponsored by CityU's Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management and Siemens Ltd (Hong Kong) Automation and Drives Division.

| National conference on international trade CityU's Department of Economics and Finance and the School of International Trade and Economics, University of International Business and Economics, Beijing, will host the 5th National Conference on International Trade from 9 to 12 August at CityU. Professor H K Chang, President, will be joined by senior officials from the Ministry of Commerce; Office of Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council; and Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in Hong Kong at the opening ceremony.

Dr Zhu Guobin, Director of the External Liaison and Cooperation Office and Associate Professor in the School of Law, has been elected to the 11th Committee of the Association of Hubei Youth, to serve from April 2006 to April 2011. He was also appointed Guest Professor to Central South University, from July 2006 to July 2011. Dr Alex Fang Chengyu and Dr Caesar Lun Suen, Assistant Professors in the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics, have been elected to the Executive Committee of the Association for Modernization of Chinese Language Education. In addition, Dr Lun has been elected to the Standing Executive Committee of the same Association and will serve as Secretary-General of the Hong Kong Secretariat.
