Outcomes Based Teaching and Learning
The University will be running a series of workshops and sharing sessions over the next few weeks as part of the third phase of the Outcomes Based Teaching and Learning (OBTL) project. The series began with a plenary address by Professor John Biggs, an expert in constructive alignment and the principal consultant on the OBTL project, entitled "Designing teaching and learning activities and assessment to align with course intended learning outcomes," to more than 220 CityU colleagues on 11 January. The workshops, running from 16 January to 2 March, aim to support colleagues as they revisit the aims, objectives and intended learning outcomes of the University's educational programmes.

OBTL is a key project for the University, one that builds upon positive comments in the last two Teaching and Learning Quality Process Reviews in which the University Grants Committee commended CityU for its exemplary Quality Assurance structure. The first phase of OBTL, which began in September 2005, focused on defining what is meant by OBTL, and the aim of the second phase was to review intended learning outcomes for all programmes and courses.

 

Admission for University programmes
The University is offering 169 programmes this year for 200607 entry. These programmes comprise professional doctorate, research and taught postgraduate, bachelor's and associate degrees, including full-time, part-time and combined modes. The application period is from 13 January to 28 February 2006. For MPhil and PhD programmes, applications are accepted throughout the year and will be considered in two rounds, 31 January and 30 April 2006.

 

Research grant award
A research project looking at the key issues and problems of air pollution in Hong Kong has been awarded $386,000 by the Research Grants Council in the first round of the Public Policy Research Funding Scheme. The project is entitled "Assessment on the suitability of existing air quality objectives and air pollution index used in Hong Kong." The Principal Investigator is Dr Jane Weizhen Lu, an associate professor in the Department of Building and Construction.

 

English version of CCIV
The Academic Policy Committee of Senate has approved the English version of the Chinese Civilisation courses, to take effect from Semester A 2006-07. Growing demand from international/exchange students and non-Chinese speaking local students to learn more about Chinese culture pointed to the need to formalize the courses, which will be offered to all non-Chinese speaking undergraduate and international/exchange students as equivalents to the existing courses taught in Chinese.


New Students' Union Committee
The 21st Executive Committee of the City University of Hong Kong Students' Union has been inaugurated. The term of office is from 1 January 2006 to 31 December 2006. Mr Li Chun-fung, Kelvin, is the new President. Ms Genie Chan and Mr Max Wan are the new Internal Vice-President and External Vice-President, respectively.

 

New members of University Council
Professor (Chair) Roderick Wong, Dean of Research and Graduate Studies, has been nominated by Senate to serve on the University Council from 1 January 2006 to 31 December 2008. The newly elected President of the Student's Union, Mr Li Chung-fung, Kelvin, will also serve on the Council, from 1 January 2006 to 31 December 2006.

 

Kudos
Professor (Chair) Nora Tam of the Department of Biology and Chemistry has been named a Fellow of the prestigious Institute of Biologists (IOB) for her contributions to biology. IOB is the UK's professional body for biologists, representing more than 14,000 members working in industry, research, education and healthcare. It is one of the largest international societies for biologists. There are currently only six IOB Fellows in Hong Kong, and Professor Tam is the seventh.

 

Distinguished Lecture Series
Professor Li Ta-tsien from Fudan University, who is a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a foreign member of the French Academy of Sciences, will deliver a lecture on "Controllability and observability for quasilinear hyperbolic systems" for the William Benter Distinguished Lecture Series, 4:30 pm, 25 January. The lecture, organized by the Liu Bie Ju Centre for Mathematical Sciences will take place at the Faculty of Science and Engineering Conference Room (B6605), 6/F Academic Building.

 

Chinese New Year Staff Party
The Year of the Dog Chinese New Year Party, organized by the Human Resources Office, will take place on 10 February (Friday), 11:30am2:30pm.

A lunch buffet will be held in the Multi-purpose Rooms, followed by a variety of celebration programmes at the Chan Tai Ho Multi-purpose Hall. The Chinese New Year Staff Party has become an annual ritual of good fortune, fun and camaraderie at CityU. Tickets will be distributed via departmental general offices soon.
