Mainland research student collaborations
To enhance our academic partnership with key mainland universities and to facilitate academic exchange, the University has initiated collaboration schemes for co-supervising research students with three mainland partners: the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), Tsinghua University's Graduate School in Shenzhen and Wuhan University. The schemes will be implemented in 2005-06.

Projects under the schemes will be applied research in nature to help strengthen the University's research profile. Research students from partner institutions will be admitted as "part-time affiliated research students" of CityU. They will undertake their research on mainland campuses, jointly supervised by CityU and the partner institution. Upon completion, the students will receive a degree from their institutions and a certificate from CityU. Outstanding affiliated research students will be admitted as self-financing PhD students of CityU during the last two years of their study on the mainland. Upon fulfilling both institutions' requirements, the student will receive a PhD degree jointly awarded by CityU and the partner institution.

A Working Group on Mainland Research Student Collaborations was established in March to advise the Dean of Research and Graduate Studies on all matters relating to mainland collaboration schemes. The Working Group is responsible for, among other things, vetting project proposals for the collaboration schemes, monitoring the progress of individual projects through their submission of an annual report, and considering budget proposals from project teams.

Student Leadership Conference 2005
With the theme "Your Responsibility, Your Leadership", the Student Leadership Conference (SLC), which enters its sixth year, will be held 26 July-3 August. The SLC 2005 is jointly organized with Shenzhen University, and it is the first time CityU student leaders have cooperated with their mainland counterparts to host the SLC. A Student Organizing Committee, comprising students from both CityU and Shenzhen University, was formed to actively plan and implement the conference. Programmes include leadership training, seminars and company visits for participants to advance their knowledge about humanitarian concerns and social responsibilities. Students from some 30 prominent universities from around the world will join the conference this year.

Science and Engineering Fun Days
The Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE) will organize Science and Engineering Fun Days for S4 to S7 students, 25-29 July. With a series of laboratory sessions, campus/laboratory tours and generic talks, the event aims to provide opportunities for secondary students to appreciate how modern technologies can change our daily life, and to gain a deeper understanding of FSE's learning environment and facilities.

New CityU Press titles
CityU Press will present 71 titles at the annual Hong Kong Book Fair to be held 20-25 July. Among the eight new books is A Dialogue with Young People on Whole Person Development by Professor Edmond Ko. The book gives practical suggestions to current and potential university students. Four new titles of the East and Southeast Asia Series: Understanding Myanmar, Understanding Laos, Understanding Vietnam and Understanding the Philippines will also be presented. The CityU booths are located at 1J21 and 1J23, the University Square, the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Senior appointments
Professor Lam Kwan-sing, Paul and Professor Tam Fung-yee, Nora of the Department of Biology and Chemistry; and Professor Pun Yue-bun, Edwin, of the Department of Electronic Engineering, have been promoted to Professor (Chair), with effect from 1 September 2005.

Honours
Professor Gerard McCoy, Adjunct Professor of the School of Law, has been awarded the Silver Bauhinia Star in the Chief Executive's annual Honours List. Professor McCoy is conferred the honour for his valuable contribution to revolutionizing the system of law reporting in Hong Kong and thereby significantly advancing the quality of justice. He has also advanced legal horizons through his writings and editorships.

Kudos
The Pacific Economic Review (PER), founded by Professor Eden Yu, Head of the Department of Economics and Finance, has been included in the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI). PER is the second economics journal from Asia included in the SSCI. The Review aspires to be a high quality publication highlighting economic linkage throughout the Asia Pacific Rim.

"The Identities of Chinese Architecture", a paper by Dr Charlie Xue, Lecturer of the Division of Building Science and Technology, and Ms Sun Yu of Shanghai Modern Design Group, was selected as one of the five excellent papers in the 2005 annual conference of the Architectural Society of China. The paper was selected from more than 100 entries.

More kudos
The independent film b420 by Mr Mathew Tang, a graduate of the School of Creative Media, was awarded the Grand Prix in the 19th Fukuoka Film Festival after being selected for screening in the 29th Hong Kong International Film Festival in April. He is the first Hong Kong winner to receive this prestigious award.

Mr Chan Chi-on, Mr Chan Ching-tung, Tony and Mr Lam Man-yu, Victor, postgraduate students from the Engineering Doctorate (Engineering Management) programme of the Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Management Engineering, received individually the Best Paper Award in the 10th International Conference on ISO 9000 & TQM.

Seminar
"A Macro-to-Nano Speckle Technique for MEMS, Nanotechnology and Heart Mechanics", a seminar organized by the Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management, will be held in the FSE Conference Room (B6605), 10:30 am - noon, 22 July (Friday). The speaker is Dr Chiang Fu-pen, SUNY Distinguished Professor and Chair, Deparatment of Mechanical Engineering, Stony Brook University, New York.
