20th Anniversary Celebration
On 20 December, the University will organize a 20th Anniversary Celebration to mark the highlight of the anniversary year. Dr Alice Lam, Chairman of the University Grants Committee, will officiate. Former Council Chairmen and Presidents, previous and current Council members, honorary award holders, associates and friends of the CityU, will participate in the celebrations. All students, alumni and staff are welcome to attend the event at 12 noon in the University Circle. In addition to a musical feast provided by the CityU Philharmonic Orchestra and CityU alumnus Mr Edwin Siu, plus inter-hall tug-of-war competition, prize presentations and light buffet, participants will also witness the completion of the largest handprint painting in the world. CityU has already submitted an application to the Guinness World Records for creating the largest handprint painting that has met the minimum requirement to break the world record.

 

20th Anniversary stamp pane
A commemorative stamp pane, which highlights the major milestones of the University in the last two decades, is now available for sale at the Cut Price Shop. It comes with an exquisitely designed hard cover folder on which captions are printed. The stamp pane costs HK$150 each.

 

CCCU building
The University Council noted the views of the Management Board and the feedback of staff and students concerning the six possible sites for the on-campus Community College of City University (CCCU) building and decided that the building should be located in the area adjacent to Nam Shan Chuen Road on a site comprising a combination of sites B and Z, excluding the Nam Shan Yuen quarters. The University has submitted an application for a Government loan to finance the building project on 20 November.

 

Name chosen for Student Residence Hall 4
The Council endorsed the proposal to name Block 4, Phase II of the Student Residence "Jockey Club Academy Hall" at its meeting on 22 November. A naming ceremony is planned for March 2005.

 

Honorary Fellow Scheme
The University will establish an honorary appointment scheme to confer the title of "Honorary Fellow of the City University of Hong Kong" to distinguished professionals and business people who have made outstanding contributions to the academic mission of the University.

 

Visiting young scholars from mainland
The Department of English and Communication is launching the Visiting Programme for Young Scholars from the Mainland with an aim to broaden young scholars' intellectual horizon and foster relations with budding academics. About 10 academics currently teaching journalism and mass communication from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Nanjing University, Wuhan University, and Zhejiang University, will be invited to participate. Each will spend a month in the Department, working on a project that is expected to turn into a quality publication. The first cohort of three young scholars is expected to arrive in late December 2004 or early January 2005.

 

Senior staff appointment
Ms Chan Yin-ling, Kathy, Acting Director of the Development and Alumni Relations Office, has been appointed Director with effect from 1 December 2004.

 

SS students recognized for volunteer work
Mr Tse Ping-kin, Tony, a Year 1 student in BSocSc (Hons) Social Work, Department of Applied Social Studies (SS), won an award in the 2004-2005 Hong Kong Outstanding Youth Volunteers Scheme, co-organized by the Steering Committee on Promotion of Volunteer Service, Social Welfare Department, and Radio Television Hong Kong Radio 2.

Chan Wai-wah, Viva, a final-year student of the BSocSc (Hons) Social Work, was chosen as the Volunteer of the Year 2004 by the Agency for Volunteer Service in recognition of her commitment to social services.


Research degree students won best paper prizes
Research degree students in the Department of Electronic Engineering clinched top prizes in the IEEE Region 10 (Asia Pacific Region) Student Paper Contest 2004. Mr Yum Tsz-yin, Kenji, a PhD student, won first prize in the Postgraduate Section while Mr Chiu Leung, an MPhil student, received second prize in the Undergraduate Section.

Mr Fu King-yu, a PhD student in the Department of Physics and Materials Science, won the Excellent Young Scientist Paper Award from the Chinese Materials Research Society.


Kudos
Dr Bertha Du-Babcock, Associate Professor, Department of English and Communication, received the 2004 Meada Gibbs Outstanding Teaching Award by the Association for Business Communication (ABC), US, in recognition of her innovative teaching and research to enhance teaching context and pedagogical approaches.

 

More Kudos
Chair Professor Chan Chi-hou, Dean, Faculty of Science and Engineering; Dr Li Qiusheng, Jonathan, Associate Professor, Department of Building and Construction; and Dr Li Hanxiong, Associate Professor, Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management; received the Joint Research Fund for Hong Kong and Macao Young Scholars under the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars.

 

Greeting cards
The University has designed two greeting cards for celebration of X'mas and the New Year. The cards, which cost HK$5 or HK$6 each, are now available for sale at the Cut Price shop.


New book published
The City University of Hong Kong Press is launching a new title Guide Pratique de ConversationFrançais/Cantonais/Mandarin by Mr David Santandreu, Lecturer, Division of Language Studies. The book provides trilingual translations of daily conversational phrases in French, Cantonese and Putonghua.


Annual Report received HKMA award
CityU's 2002-2003 Annual Report receives an Honorable Mention in the 2004 Hong Kong Management Association Best Annual Reports Awards.
