Honorary Fellows
The University will confer the title of Honorary Fellow on Dr the Hon Chiang Lai-wan, JPMr Kenneth Koo and Mr Lau Ming-wai, JP, in recognition of their significant contributions to the development of, and service to, the University. The ceremony will be held on 16 October.

 

Information Day
A series of talks introducing CityU’s new Discovery-enriched Curriculum, new programmes, campus life and facilities to secondary students, parents, teachers and the general public will feature at Information Day on 20 October. The Admissions Office will give tips on selecting programmes and interviews, too.

 

CityU Homecoming Gala
Alumni, students, staff and their families are invited to a full schedule of activities at the CityU Homecoming Gala organised by the Alumni Relations Office (ARO). Under the theme “CityU Family Blossoms in United Colours”, the Gala includes a kick-off ceremony, sports activities, an international food festival, a guided campus tour, photo-taking marshals, a reunion lunch and dinner, game booths, fun learning classes, a film show, and much more. The event takes place on 28 October.

 

New department head
Professor Tam Chi-ming will assume the duties of Head of the Division of Building Science and Technology from 1 October. Professor Tam has worked at the University for over 25 years and is currently a Professor in the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering.

 

Naming ceremony
In recognition of the contributions to CityU made by alumni Mr Peter Ho Ka-nam and Mr James Liu Ying-yin, LT-12 and Multi-Purpose Room (ABC) will be named as the “Mr and Mrs Ho Chun Hung Lecture Theatre” and the “James Liu Multi-Purpose Room” respectively. A Thank You Reception cum Naming Ceremony will be held on 10 October.

 

President’s Lecture Series
Professor Zhang Longxi, Chair Professor of Comparative Literature and Translation in the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics, will deliver the next in the President’s Lecture Series: Excellence in Academia. Professor Zhang, one of CityU’s 10 academicians, will discuss the reversal of utopia and dystopia and look to the future when utopia may give expression again to human desires for a better way of life. His talk titled “In Search of a Land of Happiness: Utopia and Its Discontents” will take place on 9 October. 

 

Literary evening
Ms Xu Xi, the Writer-in-Residence in the Department of English, will moderate a talk with the acclaimed Irish novelist, short-story writer, essayist, playwright, journalist, critic and poet Mr Colm Tóibín. This event is free, and open to the public, and includes the talk, a reading and Q&A followed by a reception and book signing. The event will take place at Wei Hing Theatre on 12 October.

 

Kudos
In the recent Hong Kong Contemporary Art Awards (HKCAA) 2012, Dr Hector Rodriguez, Associate Professor of the School of Creative Media (SCM), won an Achievement Award with his video art project Gestus: Judex. Mr Ip Yuk-yiu, Associate Professor of SCM, won an HKCAA for his digital art project Another Day of Depression in Kowloon, a virtual ethnographic study and digital portrait of Hong Kong. Max Chan Wang, a Year 2 student on the Bachelor of Arts in Creative Media, won an HKCAA, too, for his photography work Unfolded.

PhD students Zhang Zhao and Zhao Mingbo from the Department of Electronic Engineering (EE) were the Second Runner-up in the 2012 Postgraduate Paper Contest organised by the IEEE (HK) Computational Intelligence Chapter. Their winning paper “Trace Ratio Optimization based Semi-Supervised Multimodal Nonlinear Dimensionality Reduction for Marginal Manifold Visualization” was supervised by Professor Tommy Chow Wai-shing of EE.

PhD student Li Mingjian, also from the Department of Electronic Engineering, received the Best Student Paper Award (Second Prize) in the 2012 IEEE International Workshop on Electromagnetics (IEEE iWEM2012): Applications and Student Innovation Competition. His winning paper “The Low-profile Magneto-electric Dipole Antenna” was supervised by Professor Luk Kwai-man, Chair Professor in EE.
