Discover & Innovate @ CityU Exhibition
The Discover & Innovate @ CityU Exhibition will be held at the IFC Mall in Central from 4 to 8 May. Dr Norman Leung Nai-pang, Pro-Chancellor, the Hon Leung Chun-ying, Council Chairman, and Professor Way Kuo, University President will officiate at the opening ceremony on 4 May at 5pm. On display will be groundbreaking research in creative media, bioengineering, environmental protection, sustainable energy, virtual reality, artificial intelligence and cultural heritage. The exhibition aims to showcase to the public our capacity to produce problem-driven research that responds directly to the needs of society. It will also be promoting CityU’s new curricular focus on the twin themes of discovery and innovation.

 

Teaching Excellence Award
Mr Kwok Kam-hung, Instructor in the Chinese Civilisation Centre, has won this year’s Teaching Excellence Award. His winning application was singled out for achieving “innovative student engagement”. The award will be formally presented at Congregation in November.   

 

President’s Lecture Series
The next talk in the President’s Lecture Series: Excellence in Academia will be presented by Professor Jeffrey Shaw, Dean of the School of Creative Media and Chair Professor of Media Art, on 6 May. His talk is titled “Future Cinema—creating new realities”.

 

New appointment
Professor Xie Min has been appointed as Chair Professor of Industrial Engineering in the Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management. Professor Xie assumed duty on 3 May. Professor Xie received his PhD from Linkoping University in Sweden. His research interests include quality engineering, reliability engineering and applications. He has published over 200 journal articles, 100 conference papers and eight books and he is an elected Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. 

 

New academy for the humanities
Four academics from the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) have joined the newly formed Hong Kong Academy of the Humanities. Professor Zhang Longxi, Chair Professor of Comparative Literature and Translation, will be the inaugural Vice-President. Chair Professor Gregory Lee, Dean of CLASS, Chair Professor Kingsley Bolton, Head of the Department of English, and Chair Professor Lee Chin-chuan, Head of the Department of Media and Communication, are Foundation Fellows. The academy draws together for the first time Hong Kong’s leading scholars in the humanities from all its institutions of higher education to form a united voice.

 

AAPBS Academic Conference 2011
The College of Business (CB) will host the Association of Asia–Pacific Business Schools (AAPBS) from 12–13 May at CityU under the theme “Nurturing Global Business Leaders in Asia for the World”. The conference will explore the role of business schools in preparing students for the business world. The officiating guests at the opening ceremony on 12 May will include Professor K C Chan, SBS, JP, Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, HKSAR, Professor Way Kuo, University President, and Professor Wei Kwok-kee, Dean of CB.

 

EDGE lectures
A new staff development series organised by the Office of Educational Development and General Education (EDGE) will focus on peer review of teaching and faculty mentoring. The {ENGAGE\ CONNECT} Lectures 2011 will take place from 17–19 May. Five invited speakers from Australia and the UK will give related lectures. Professor Gregory Raupp, Vice-President of Research and Technology, and Professor Arthur Ellis, Provost, will open the sessions on 17 May and 18 May, respectively.

 

Kudos
Mr Chris Cheung Hon-him, a BACM graduate from the School of Creative Media, has won the Award for Young Artist (Media Arts) in the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards 2010.

Ms Heiward Mak Hei-yan, another BACM graduate from the School of Creative Media, has won the Award for Best Screenplay at the 30th Hong Kong Film Academy Awards for her co-scripted work with film director Mr Pang Ho-cheung for Love in a Puff.
