| New appointment
Professor Istvan Horvath has been appointed concurrently as Chair Professor of Chemistry and Head of Department of Biology and Chemistry. Assumed duty on 4 May, Professor Horvath is a world-leading scientist with high international visibility in the fields of catalysis and green chemistry; and has made numerous impactful discoveries in fluorous biphase catalysis.

| Lecture series
As part of the France-Hong Kong Distinguished Lecture Series, held under the auspices of the French Academy of Sciences and Consulate General of France in Hong Kong, Professor Pierre Corvol, President and Chair of Experimental Medicine, Collège de France, will deliver a lecture entitled Deciphering the Vascular Tree at 4:30pm on 7 May. The lecture is one of the signature events of CityU's 25th anniversary celebrations, and will take place at the SCOPE Lecture Theatre.

e-Learning Forum
The Education Development Office will hold the e-Learning Forum Asia 2009 at CityU from 11 to 12 May. The forum will showcase various innovative e-learning initiatives at CityU. International and local speakers, guests and participants were invited to the forum, including those from partner institutions and secondary schools. Professor Way Kuo, University President, Dr Yang Zhijian, Deputy Director-General of Higher Education at the Ministry of Education, and Dr Chan Ka-ki, Deputy Secretary for Education of the Education Bureau, will officiate at the opening ceremony.

Literature and culture
The International Conference on World Literature and Culture is to be held at CityU from 9 to 10 May. Co-sponsored by Stockholm University, the conference features speakers from prestigious universities from around the world, including the US, Europe, Middle East and India. CityU’s Professor Zhang Longxi, Chair Professor of Comparative Literature and Translation, is both a speaker and the organiser of the event, which will re-examine the world’s literature as a whole from a truly global perspective.

| Resourceful win
A paper entitled A Unified Cross-Layer Framework for Resource Allocation in Cooperative Networks, co-authored by Dr Dai Lin, Assistant Professor, Department of Electronic Engineering, won the IEEE Marconi Prize Paper Award in Wireless Communications 2009. This is an annual award organised by the IEEE Communications Society and IEEE Signal Processing Society for an original paper in the field of Wireless Communications published in the IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications in the previous calendar year.

| SCM forum
The School of Creative Media organised an Industry Night Forum on 5 May. Discussing “the fusion of creativity, media and enterprise in coming future”, five honourable guests, including Mr Sze Yan-ngai, Mr John Chong Ching, Mr Cuson Law Kai-sun, Dr Lewis Chong Chi-hung and Mr Joseph T S Ma, were invited to talk to students about their experience and the future of the creative industries.
