review
Five distinguished experts visited the School of Law (SLW) on 45 December
to provide advice on the strategic direction of the School. The feedback
is aimed at enhancing the quality of SLW's academic programmes and focusing
its research agenda, with a view to achieving global leadership and local
pre-eminence.
During the two-day visit, the experts reviewed the strengths
of the School and areas for improvement, the international competitiveness
of its education and research programmes, and examined areas for potential
new programmes. The review panel has submitted a written report to CityU,
providing recommendations on SLW's strategic direction over the future
years.

| GE workshop
A workshop on the interdisciplinarity of GE was held on 3 December 2008,
with a panel of visiting Fulbright Scholars from the US presenting examples
of interdisciplinary courses, with the aim of developing an effective
GE framework for the forthcoming four-year curriculum. It is held in order
to improve the ability of teaching and non-teaching staff to manage the
transition from the three-year degree to four-year degree curriculum structure.

| Conference
and carvings
The opening ceremony for the 13th International Conference on Cantonese
& Yue Dialects, incorporating the Exhibition on Pre-historic Rock
Carvings in Hong Kong and the Region, will be held on 18 December. Mr
Tsang Tak-sing, Secretary for Home Affairs; Professor
Jonathan Webster, Head of Department of Chinese, Translation
and Linguistics, and Professor Benjamin T'sou Ka-yin,
Director of Language Information Sciences Research Centre, will be the
officiating guests at the ceremony. More than 80 scholars and experts
from around the world will attend the three-day conference. Professor
Thomas Lee Hun-tak, Department of Linguistics & Modern Languages,
The Chinese University of Hong Kong; Professor Mai Yun,
The Institute of Linguistics, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and
Professor Bell Yung, Department of Music, University
of Pittsburgh, will be the keynote speakers. The exhibition will run until
31 January.

| Urban issues
The international conference, Social Capital and Volunteering in Modern
Ageing Cities: Building Intergenerational Inclusion, is being held at
CityU from 1519 December. Co-organised by the Department of Applied Social
Studies; Central Policy Unit, Government of Hong Kong SAR; University
of Macau and University of Salford, UK, the conference addresses three
issues confronting modern cities, their inhabitants, service providers
and policy makers: social capital, voluntary work and ageing.

| New appointment
Ms Tan Shih-ying has been appointed Director of the Communications
Office. Ms Tan has extensive experience in the field of communications,
having studied journalism in Taiwan and mass communications in the US.
She was previously Director of Corporate Communications Asia Pacific for
a major multinational corporation responsible for branding, marketing
communications, corporate campaign, public relations, and communication
strategies in the region.

| Flawless
argument
The CityU Chinese Debating Team was crowned champion in the "Famplus2
Cup Inter-U Debate Competition 2008" on 30 November. The team comprised
Jimmy Fong Ki-fai, Year 2 student from the Department
of Public and Social Administration; Carey Tse Yuen-ting,
Year 1 student from the same department; Karen Cheng Yu-kiu,
Year 2 student from the Department of Marketing; Johnathan Chui
King-wah, Year 2 student from the Department of Information Systems.
CityU stood for the negative side of the statement, "The Government
should censor the pornographic materials on the Internet," and defeated
The Chinese University of Hong Kong to take the champion's crown.

| Rowing titles
CityU's Rowing Club was crowned men's coxed eight and women's coxless
four champions at the Hong Kong, China Rowing Association's Rowing Ladder
2008 regatta. The competition winner is decided according to points accrued
in selected events and regattas.

| Alumni award
Department of Computer Science graduate Jonathan Chan Pok-chi
has won the 2008 College of Science and Engineering (CSE) Alumni Achievement
Award. CSE established the award to give public recognition to CSE alumni
as well as to strengthen the relationship between the College and its
alumni.

| Student
scholarships
Eight CityU students received scholarships from the Endeavour Cheung Kong
Student Exchange Programme (Undergraduates) 2008 in recognition of their
outstanding academic performance. Chan Lai-ying, Sarah
B Cox, Hillary Allison Fung, Leung Wai-ho,
Samantha Ng Kwun-yin, Pang Hiu-man,
Pang Kit-lai and Yeung Tsz-kit received AUD5,000 each
to study at Australian higher institutions for a semester.

| Dissertation
awards
Three Department of Public and Social Administration MA graduates in the
Housing Studies programme have received the Best Dissertation Award from
the Chartered Institute of Housing (Asia Pacific Branch). The topic of
their project was "A Study of Gated Communities and Neighbourliness".
The recipients were Ken Chu Ka-po, Eric Lee Tin-hung
and Tim Siu Kit-pun. Ho Man-kit (BA
(Hons) Housing Studies programme) and Wong Ka-biu (MA
Housing Studies programme) received the Best Student Awards jointly presented
by the Chartered Institute of Housing (Asia Pacific Branch) and the Hong
Kong Institute of Housing.
