Caring card
To give all members of the CityU community the opportunity to express their devotion to the University, the Council's Community Relations Committee and the Development and Alumni Relations Office have recently introduced the "We Love CityU" Caring Card. Students, staff and alumni may subscribe for a Caring Card by donating HK$25 to the University to help fund student development programmes such as scholarships, bursaries and meaningful student activities. As a token of appreciation, every Caring Card comes with a HK$12 dessert coupon and HK$20 dining coupon sponsored respectively by Maxim's Group and Shing Hin Catering Group. Gathering with President
Professor Way Kuo, University President, will meet CityU alumni and staff to talk about the future development of CityU under the theme of "Scaling new heights with a dual focus on teaching and research" on 4 September. The programme entitled "Happy gathering: A chat on the future development of CityU" is co-hosted by the Development and Alumni Relations Office and CityU Convocation. Interested staff may contact Mr Chung at 3442 6627 for details.


Welcoming elderly students
The Elder Academy held a welcoming ceremony on 1 September for 38 senior students who will partake in 27 undergraduate courses at CityU. To help the senior students familiarise with university life and the study environment, the University has recruited 20 undergraduate students through the Buddy Scheme to help senior students learn about the modes of teaching and role of the electronic platform in learning. The recently established Elder Academy was launched in cooperation with the Elderly Commission and the Labour and Welfare Bureau to encourage the elderly to take part in education, improve their well-being and maintain a sense of worthiness.


Law lecture
The School of Law is co-organising a lecture entitled "The Challenge of Civil Justice Reform: Delivering Law Enforcement at Proportionate Cost and in Reasonable Time" with the Faculty of Law, The University of Hong Kong, on 9 September. Professor Adrian Zuckerman, Professor of Civil Procedure at the University of Oxford, will be the speaker. Mr Justice Anselmo Reyes, Judge, Court of First Instance, High Court, will also attend the lecture and offer comments. The lecture will be held at Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre at 5:30pm.


Chinese antiques
The CityU Gallery will hold an exhibition, "Ming Qing in the Eyes of Ming-Qing", from 5 September to 26 September. There are around 80 exhibits, including paintings, emperor's calligraphy, paper fans, Guqin (a seven-string Chinese musical instrument), pottery ware, carvings and embroidery from the Ming and Qing dynasties. They form part of the private collection of Ms Catherine Wang Mingqing, a well-known figure in the arts and culture scene. The exhibition will open on 5 September. Officiating guests include Mr Cai Wenzhong, Deputy Director General of Publicity, Culture and Sports Department, Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR; Mr Song Ronghua, spokesman, Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China in the HKSAR; Professor Way Kuo, President of CityU; Professor Cheng Pei-kai, Director of the Chinese Civilisation Centre; Ms Wang and various art and culture celebrities.


Psychology research award
Pizza Chow Ka-yee, a recent Applied Social Studies graduate, received the Award of Excellence in the 2008 Student International Research Awards organised by Division 52 (International Psychology) of the American Psychological Association for her research paper Self-stigma, Homosexual Identity and "Coming Out": A Comparative Study of Lesbians in Hong Kong and Mainland China. Pizza was the only undergraduate among the three award-winning students. Her supervisor was Professor Cheng Sheung-tak in the Department of Applied Social Studies.


Future entrepreneurs
Three Department of Information Systems students clinched champion and runner-up titles in the 2008 eBay Young Entrepreneur Contest. Championship winners Rony Chan Ka-wai and Tracy Wong Siu-yee's e-shop, U.mall, which sold sports shoes and computer products, achieved a total turnover of US$90K in less than three months from mid-February to the end of April. Their classmate Jo Ho Tsz-ting was awarded the runner-up title in the individual category for the effective running of her Josephine Store, which sold mobile phones and mini notebooks.


Rowing success
The Rowing Club of CityU had a hugely successful regatta in Malaysia's UNITEN Rowing Invitational 2008, winning the championship in the men's division coxless four race and claiming the silver medal in the women's division. Tsui Kam-hung, a Department of Economics and Finance student, was the runner-up in the men's single scull. Co-organised by the University of Tenaga Nasional and the Malaysian Rowing Association, the competition attracted 15 universities from Malaysia and Hong Kong to compete in the event held from 7 August to 10 August.
