School of Law signs international agreements
The School of Law has signed collaborative agreements with the University of Oxford, UK, to provide opportunities for CityU law students to study at Oxford. CityU also finalised two agreements with the PRC's Supreme Court and National Judges College to provide advanced legal training for serving mainland judges at a ceremony at the Supreme Court of the PRC in Beijing on 29 February. This is the first time the Supreme Court of the PRC and National Judges College have collaborated with an academic institution to provide training for mainland judges at the Master's degree level.


Berkeley deal means business
The Haas School of Business of the University of California, Berkeley, will provide advanced management executive programmes to students of the Faculty of Business of CityU under an agreement signed on 20 February. Under this agreement, the two schools will work closely on the exchange of students, academics, research personnel and administrative heads. In one such exchange, 60 business executives studying at CityU will travel to Berkeley in the US for five days of executive leadership training in marketing, finance and entrepreneurship.

 

Cheung Kong Chair Professorship
Professor Zhou Nan, Head of the Department of Marketing, has been granted a Cheung Kong Chair Professorship under the Cheung Kong Scholars Programme 2007. He will contribute his expertise on enterprise management to Wuhan University for nine months or more during the coming three years. The Cheung Kong Scholars Programme was established by the Ministry of Education and Li Ka Shing Foundation in 1998 to further improve China's standard of education and intellectual competitiveness through the training of the country's best and brightest young minds.


Chinese Week
The Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics (CTL) will hold Chinese Week 2008 from 11 March to 14 March with the aim of promoting Chinese language and literature. Programmes include seminars on modern Chinese literature, Chinese calligraphy, wuxia fiction, modern literature and cinema, canto-pop lyrics, performances in calligraphy, recitation and Tai Chi and game booths on various Chinese cultures. Chinese Week will be opened on 11 March at the Covered Terrace by Professor Paul Lam Kwan-sing, Acting Vice-President (Undergraduate Education); Professor Lilian Vrijmoed Kwan Lee-ping, Dean of Student Learning; Professor Martin Painter, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences; and Professor Jonathan Webster, Head of CTL.


Sharing the experience of art
The Library and Human Resources Office have organised the second "Exhibition of Art Works by Members of CityU Community". The display features paintings, calligraphy, sketches, photos and glass sculpture created by CityU staff. The exhibition opens on 6 March with a session entitled "Sharing the Experience of Art" and an opening ceremony at which the officiating guests will be Professor Richard Ho Yan-ki, Acting President, Dr Jerry Yu Jer-tsang, Chief Information Officer, Dr Ellen Ko Law Yin-lan, Vice-President for Administration, Mrs Eva Ng Li Yee-wah, Acting Director of Human Resources and Professor Steve Ching Hsianghoo, University Librarian. The exhibition will be on display in the Learning Commons (Library) from 6 March to 31 March.


Wellness March up and running
CityU formed a team to participate in the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon on 17 February, which marked the start of Wellness March 2008. CityU organises the programme from February to April every year. To promote healthy living, a series of physical activities, competitions, assessments, music performances, workshops and outdoor pursuits, plus free use of the CityU sports facilities, are provided throughout the period.

 

City Literary Awards
The City Literary Awards have received an overwhelming response and the organising committee has announced that the contribution deadline will be postponed to 10 March. All winning entries of last year's awards have been published in a book, Listening to the Note of the City, which will be distributed on campus.

 

Sporting success
The CityU fencing, taekwondo and woodball teams achieved impressive results in the inter-collegiate competition organised by the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China. The women's taekwondo and woodball teams and the men's fencing squad were crowned champions. A second place by the men's woodball team also contributed to CityU's winning of the overall title in that event. The fencing and taekwondo teams both took second place overall.
