| New President
candidate
The Search Committee for the President has decided unanimously and unreservedly
to recommend Professor Way Kuo to the University Council
for appointment as the new President of the University. Professor Kuo
is University Distinguished Professor and Dean of Engineering at the University
of Tennessee (UT), Knoxville, US. Professor Kuo is a distinguished scholar,
with a proven track record in University education and research and he
has held senior administrative positions in both academic and research
institutions. He is a Professor of Industrial and Information Engineering
and Electrical and Computer Engineering at UT and is an elected member
of the prestigious US National Academy of Engineering, the International
Academy for Quality and the Academia Sinica in Taiwan. Professor Kuo was
born in Taipei and received his BS degree in Nuclear Engineering from
the National Tsing-Hua University in Taiwan in 1972. He received a PhD
degree in Industrial Engineering in 1980 from Kansas State University.
Before submitting its final recommendation to the Council at its meeting
to be held on Monday the 26th November, the Search Committee has decided
to arrange for a group of staff members and students to meet with Professor
Kuo on 23 November 2007.

ranking improves
City University of Hong Kong (CityU) jumped five places from 154th last
year to 149th this year among the world's top universities, according
to The Times Higher Education Supplement (THES) 2007 survey. CityU is
one of the four Hong Kong universities listed in the top 200. CityU broke
into the world's top 200 universities four years ago (ranked 198th) and
has continued to climb ever since. It was ranked 178th and 154th in 2005
and 2006, respectively.

Education
A University Development Forum will be held on 30 November, from 2pm-4pm,
to introduce to staff and students the objectives of the General Education
(GE) Programme and its benefits to current students and to explain how
GE courses help students meet the Out-of-Discipline course requirements.
The Forum will be chaired by Professor Paul Lam Kwan-sing,
Acting Vice-President (Undergraduate Education). Professor Lilian
Vrijmoed Kwan Lee-ping, Dean of Student Learning, will provide
academic advice to students. The six GE course leaders will give a brief
introduction of their courses to assist students in the course selection
process.

| Convocation
election
The election for the first Standing Committee of Convocation was held
during its first Annual General Meeting on 7 November 2007. Voted by 2,159
members (115 in person and 2,044 by proxy), the election saw the following
members elected to chair positions on the Standing Committee, with a two-year
term from 1 January 2008 to 31 December 2009: Mr Patrick Lee Chung-wah
(Chairman) and four Vice Chairmen, Mrs Stella Li Wai-king,
Mr Will Ma Wai-kit, Mr Joseph Tsoi Wing-leung
and Dr Bryan Wong Siu-fai.

| FSE Achievement Award
The Alumni Achievement Award 2008 of the Faculty of Science and Engineering
will be open for nominations from 1 December. Members of CityU are encouraged
to recommend alumni who have achieved outstanding professional success
and made a noted contribution to CityU and society. By establishing the
award, the Faculty would like to publicly recognise the achievements of
the Faculty's alumni and strengthen the relationship between the Faculty

| Marine Research
workshop
The Centre for Marine Environmental Research and Innovative Technology
(MERIT), led by CityU, has developed a variety of novel technologies for
pollution monitoring, pollution control and risk assessment, which are
ready for practical use in Hong Kong and the region. The centre held a
two-day workshop for government officials and green group representatives
from 19-20 November to introduce these technologies. On the second day
of the workshop, researchers were to share some of MERIT's findings relevant
to environmental and resources management in Hong Kong, including the
recovery of Victoria Harbour in the wake of the commencement of operations
of the Harbour Area Treatment Scheme (HATS).

| Globalisation
conference
More than a dozen distinguished scholars from Europe, US and Asia converged
on CityU to analyse the impact of globalisation on humanity. Humanity
is one of the many aspects of wider society affected by globalisation
and forms the basis of the international conference organised by the University's
Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics. The conference, the
first of its kind in Hong Kong, is examining ways of promoting cross-cultural
exchanges. The conference is held from 1821 November. Guests officiating
at the opening ceremony are Professor Martin Painter,
Acting Dean of CityU's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and
Professor Jonathan Webster, Head of the Department of
Chinese, Translation and Linguistics.

| Kudos
Three final year students, Yang Yang, Tam Sai-man
and Lai Chun-lam, with the supervision by Dr
Raymond Lau Yiu-keung, Teaching Fellow in the Department of Information
Systems, received the Best Paper Award at the IEEE 2007 International
Conference on e-Business Engineering (Student Session). The paper, titled
"Intelligent Multi-Party Multi-Issue Bargaining System for e-Business",
is an exploitation of Web technologies, game theory and intelligent agent
techniques applied to the design and development of an automated integrative
negotiation mechanism to handle online electronic commerce.
