Exhibition on zodiac heads from the Yuanmingyuan

Four original zodiac heads from the Yuanmingyuan of the Qing imperial court are featured in a major national treasure exhibition titled “The Grand Gathering of the Century: Zodiac Heads from the Yuanmingyuan and Important Treasures”. The exhibition showcases East–West cultural exchanges and art technology via an immersive experience that will stimulate broader community engagement. This exhibition is being held at the Indra and Harry Banga Gallery and was launched in conjunction with the 26th anniversary of the establishment of Hong Kong SAR and the 100th anniversary of the co-organiser, China Tourism Group Corporation. 2023 International Cetacean Symposium

The Aquatic Animal Virtopsy Lab in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Public Health is organising the 4th “International Cetacean Symposium & Workshop”. The theme is “Reconciliation” and the event will take place at CityU from 24 to 27 July 2023. Topics include the threats that cetaceans face and their interactions with humans. Scientists, academics, veterinarians, conservationists, related government officials and public audiences can join the talks and workshops.



Science Summer Camp 2023

Organised by the College of Science at CityU, the Science Summer Camp from 10 to 15 July brings together those who plan to embark on PhD studies in science and related disciplines. The annual event offers opportunities to prospective applicants for the College of Science’s PhD programmes from all across the world to meet with talented faculty, visit the state-of-art laboratory facilities and explore an array of research areas.

The Joint University Mental Wellness Project (JUMP), led by Professor Sylvia Kwok Lai Yuk-ching in the Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences, has been awarded the Second Class Prize of the 2022 National Teaching Achievement Award for Higher Education (Undergraduate) by the Ministry of Education, Peopleˇs Republic of China. It is the most prestigious national award in higher education research and teaching. Professor Kwok’s project is one of two winning projects conducted by local higher education institutions among six projects nominated by the Education Bureau of the HKSAR Government for this round of awards.

A research paper entitled ¨Pharmaceutical Pollution of the Worldˇs Rivers〃, published in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), has been awarded the 2022 Cozzarelli Prize in the Class VI: Applied Biological, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences. Professor Kenneth Leung Mei-yee, Associate Dean (Research and Postgraduate Education), College of Science, is one of the co-authors.

Professor Ibrahim Elsohaby of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Public Health has been awarded the Kei-ichiro Maeda Memorial Award for 2023 for research into ¨Healthy People, Healthy Animals: The Power of One Health in Tacking Public Health Threats〃.

Professor Zhang Lin of the Department of Public and International Affairs has been appointed editor of The Energy Journal, an official publication of the International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE), effective January 2024.

Ms Winnie Soon, a 2008 graduate of the MA Media Cultures programme in the School of Creative Media, has been awarded the Golden Nica (Artificial Intelligence & Art Life) of Prix Ars Electronica, the worldˇs longest-running media art competition. With the award-winning works of international artists serving as a trend, this achievement offers an inspiring, current and forward-looking insight into the interface between art, technology and society.

Mr Gaybird Leung Kei-cheuk and Mr Chilai Howard Cheng, alumni of the School of Creative Media, won the Artist of the Year (Media Arts) and the Award for Young Artist (Media Arts) respectively at the 17th Hong Kong Arts Development Awards.

Deng Yanlin, Zhou Xiang, Li Wei and Liao Junchen, PhD students of Professor Khoo Bee Luan of the Department of Biomedical Engineering were awarded the Gold Medal of The Greater Bay Area STEM Excellence Award 2023 (HKSAR) for their point of care PIEB (Point-of-care In situ Evaluation Biosensor) BioChip that provides prognosis prediction and allows timely medical intervention for cancer patients. The award-winning team is a start-up under HK Tech 300.

QCNet, a modelling framework that pushes the boundaries of trajectory prediction for autonomous vehicles to enhance safety and reliability, won the championship in the Argoverse 2 Multi-agent Motion Forecasting Challenge at the Workshop on Autonomous Driving of the IEEE / CVF Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition Conference (CVPR) 2023. This breakthrough AI technology was conducted by Professor Wang Jianping in the Department of Computer Science and Zhou Zikang, a Computer Science PhD student, together with collaborators from Hon Hai Research Institute and Carnegie Mellon University. The paper, entitled ¨Query Centric Trajectory Prediction,〃 was published in the proceedings of the CVPR in June 2023 in Vancouver, Canada and was featured in the Conferenceˇs workshop on autonomous driving.

A team comprising four BSc Computer Science students (Liao Huaxin, Toktonazar Uulu Nuraaly, Turdakunov Kadyrbek and Zhenishbek Uulu Talantbek) won the OKX Web3.0 Master Award and the JLL Building Management Metaverse Application Award in the HackUST 2023. The students proposed a mobile app named ¨LeakLock〃 that addresses the issues of content centralisation and trend manipulation on the internet while utilising the capabilities of Web 3.0 and blockchain technologies.

The CityU Underwater Robotics Team came 4th in the 2023 MATE ROV World Championships held from 20 to 24 June at St. Vrain Valley School District, Longmont, Colorado, US. The CityU team has participated in this competition since 2016 and the result this year is the best ever. There were 23 teams from all over the world advancing to the world final to compete in the EXPLORE class. The team, comprising seven students from the Department of Electrical Engineering (EE) and two from the Department of Computer Science and School of Data Science, was supervised by Professor Ray Cheung Chak-chung, Associate Provost (Digital Learning), and Professor Pakpong Chirarattananon of the Department of Biomedical Engineering.
