New appointment

Professor Michael Yang Mengsu, Yeung Kin Man Chair Professor of Biomedical Sciences, has been appointed Vice-President (Research and Technology) effective from 1 December 2020. In his new capacity, Professor Yang will assist President Way Kuo in providing strategic leadership in support of the University’s research activities. Professor Yang has a strong track record in research funding and publication, and extensive experience in knowledge transfer.  



HKIAS Distinguished Lecture Series

Two talks will be held in November by the Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS). The first is by Professor Philippe G. Ciarlet, University Distinguished Professor in the College of Science, on 5 November. He will examine non-linear Korn inequalities on a surface with applications to non-linear shell theory. The speaker is a leading expert in numerical analysis, finite element methods, partial differential equations, applied differential geometry, mathematical modeling in three-dimensional elasticity, plate and shell theories. 

The speaker for the second HKIAS talk, which will be held on 25 November, will be Professor Liu Chain-tsuan, University Distinguished Professor in the College of Engineering. His talk covers alloy design of structural materials from simple disordered to complex ordered material systems. Professor Liu’s expertise lies in a range of engineering fields such as physical metallurgy and mechanical behaviour of metals, alloys, nanostructure materials, intermetallic compounds and bulk amorphous alloys, among others.

The President’s Lecture Series

This talk in the President’s Lecture Series: Excellence in Academia on 19 November by Professor Sir Colin Blakemore, Senior Fellow of the Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study and Yeung Kin Man Chair Professor of Neuroscience, elaborates on how the brain gathers, encodes and stores visual data, and raises questions about how we might account for the miraculous transformation of this data within the visual system. Dialogue Series with Consuls General

The next talk in the Dialogue Series with Consuls General features Mr Alexandre Giorgini, Consul General of France in Hong Kong and Macau, on opportunities for future studies and career development in France. The session takes place on 11 November. The Dialogue Series with Consuls General provides CityU students and staff with excellent opportunities to exchange ideas and learn about the latest development of a number of selected countries. Collaboration with Institute of Chartered Secretaries

A signing ceremony on 21 October signified the commencement of a collaborative agreement with the Hong Kong Institute of Chartered Secretaries (HKICS) on the Master of Science in Professional Accounting and Corporate Governance (Corporate Governance Stream). Professor Kim Jeong-bon, Head of the Department of Accountancy (AC), and HKICS representatives attended the signing ceremony. The programme, which will be offered through AC, aims to provide an active learning environment to develop students for leadership positions in professional accounting and corporate governance areas in Hong Kong and the Greater China region. Professor Richard Walker, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and Chan Hon Pun Professor of Behavioural and Policy Sciences, has been elected Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences (UK) in recognition of his substantial contributions to the social sciences. Founded in the UK in 1982, the Academy promotes research, publishes learned material, distributes information, organises workshops and events, and contributes to public debate on issues affecting the social sciences.

PhD students Wang Hao and Wei Yang in the Department of Electrical Engineering (EE) were awarded the 2nd Runner Up in IET Young Professionals Exhibition & Competition (YPEC) 2020 – Postgraduate Section. The winning project, supervised by Dr Tsang Kim-fung, Associate Professor in EE, is titled "A Novel COVID-19 Quarantine Directive: Optimized Dynamic Geofencing".
