IAS Distinguished Lecture

CityU Distinguished Lecture

Professor Frank Chang Mau-chung, President of National Chiao Tung University, will deliver a lecture titled “Marching Toward Great University” on 22 May. Professor Chan pursues research in the area of high-speed electronics, integrated circuit/system designs, and multiband interconnects for intra- and inter-chip communications. CityU Scholars

Following the soft launch of CityU Scholars on 18 April, eight drop-in clinic sessions will be held throughout May to give advice on using CityU’s new integrated research information system. Professor Geraint Howells, Dean of School of Law (SLW), has been appointed for another term of office from 1 September 2017 to 31 August 2019.



Chemistry symposium

The Department of Biology and Chemistry (BCH) will host the 24th Symposium on Chemistry Postgraduate Research in Hong Kong on 6 May. This major annual symposium for six local universities brings together chemistry postgraduate students, researchers, academics and industrialists to reflect on current advances in all main aspects of chemistry, exchange research ideas, and foster collaboration and networking. The number of participants this year is expected to be 600. Professor Lu Jian, Vice-President Research and Technology, Professor Hong Yan, Dean of the College of Science and Engineering, and Professor Lee Chun-sing, Head of BCH, will officiate at the opening ceremony.



UNECE forum

This three-day forum organised by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) promotes international public–private partnership (PPP) standards and best practice, exchange PPP experiences, and showcases projects and approaches to people-first PPPs across different sectors in support of the UN’s sustainable development goals. The Forum, to be held from 9 to 11 May, will also serve as a platform for teams and government officials to meet and find ways to enhance the implementation of PPP projects in their countries. Speakers and audiences include UNECE officials, government officials from 56 UNECE member countries, academics from higher education institutes and professionals from public organisations and private enterprises worldwide. Professor Luk Kwai-man, Chair Professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering, has been selected to receive the 2017 IEEE AP-S John Kraus Antenna Award for his invention called “L-shaped Probe Fed Microstrip Antenna and the Magnetoelectric Dipole Antenna for Wireless Communications”. This award highlights Professor Luk’s distinguished career in antenna theory and design technologies. IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (IEEE AP-S) is recognised as the leading Society in antenna field in the world.

The CityU sports teams won a record-breaking ninth Grand Slam in the 2016-2017 annual University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China. In addition, both the titles of the USFHK Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year went to CityU students: Yip Tsz-fung, a business student at CityU and the world’s No. 32 squash player, and Chung Chui-ting, an applied social sciences student and the world’s No. 5 woodball player, respectively. Among the 32 sports events, CityU team won 12 championships, nine 1st runners-up and five 2nd runners-up. Moreover, 11 CityU athletes were among the 32 players named Most Valuable Player in their respective events.

Cheng Junye, a PhD student in the Department of Physics and Materials Science, won the First Class Award in the New Energy and Material Subcategory at the 9th Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan PhD Student Nanshan Academic Forum with a project called “High-performance supercapacitor applications of nickel oxide-nanoparticle decorated millimeter-long vertically aligned carbon nanotube arrays via an effective supercritical CO2 assisted method”. Wang Qingtao, a PhD student in the Department of Marketing, won a First Class Award in the Economics and Finance Subcategory with the project “A Kuznets characteristic analysis of the impact of environment pollution on the size of industrial enterprises”. The Forum was held in University Town in Shenzhen from 23 to 24 April, attracting participants from around 100 renowned institutions from the mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao.
