Research Showcase 2017
CityU will hold Research Showcase 2017 under the theme “Frontier Research and Innovation@CityU” from 11 to 13 April. The event comprises an exhibition and technology forums showcasing CityU’s research achievements within three foci: One Health, Digital Society, and Smart City. The opening ceremony will be held on 10 April. The officiating guests will include The Hon Eddie Ng Hak-kim, SBS, JP, Secretary for Education; Mr Herman Hu Hiu-ming, Council Chairman; and Professor Way Kuo, President. IAS lecture
Professor Frank Kelly, Senior Fellow at CityU’s Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), will give an IAS Distinguished Lecture on 7 April. This talk constitutes the third lecture in the IAS Distinguished Lecture Series: Frontiers in Operations Research/Operations Management. The title of Professor Kelly’s talk is “A Markov model of a limit order book: thresholds, recurrence, and trading strategies”. The speaker, Professor of the Mathematics of Systems in the Statistical Laboratory at the University of Cambridge, is a Fellow of the Royal Society and a Foreign Member of the National Academy of Engineering. Headship re-appointments
Professor Michael Yang Mengsu, Head of the Department of Biomedical Sciences, has been re-appointed for another term of office, from 1 August 2017 to 31 July 2020; as has Professor Sun Dong, Head of the Department of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering, from 1 September 2017 to 31 August 2020.
CityU Career Fair 2017
The Fair from 11 to 12 April 2017 will serve as a platform for students to gain market information and job opportunities from industry professionals and company representatives, and bring in prospective employers from the public and private sectors as well as industry practitioners to introduce their expectations and entry qualifications. Three alumni from the School of Creative Media (SCM) have won the following awards at the 22nd ifva Awards this year. Ms Law Sin-yan won the Gold Award in the Open Category for And Afterwards while Ms Wong Suk-nga received a Special Mention for Fish in Puddle. Meanwhile, Mr Hui Wai-keung won the Best Local Work for Re-Dürer in the Media Art Category. ifva (Incubator for Film & Visual Media in Asia) is the most important media art competition in Hong Kong. SCM students/alumni are frequent winners at the event.
Innovative technology design by College of Business (CB) students for improving efficiency in restaurants won the Platinum Prize at the JOS Innovation Awards 2016–2017. The driving force behind "FasTABLE", which uses motion detectors to identify vacant tables and food orders, are BBA Global Business Systems Management students Kelvin Chan Hok-wah and Anson Mak Chun-him and BBA Marketing student Vanessa Lau Wing-kiu. They teamed up with a student from the University of Hong Kong. "FasTABLE" can maximise table turnover, enhance seat utilisation and shorten the wait-time in fast-food chains and food courts.
Three postgraduate and three undergraduate students from the Department of Economics and Finance (EF) performed strongly in the Rotman International Trading Competition 2017 hosted by the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto from 23 to 26 February in Canada. The CB team competed with 52 other teams from leading universities around the world in six areas, namely, Flow Traders ETF, BP Commodities, Volatility Trading, S&P Global Credit Risk, MathWorks Algo and Quantitative Outcry. The team, which was supervised by Dr Zhong Zhang, Assistant Professor in EF, took 2nd place in the algorithmic trading case and 9th in the global credit risk case.
A team of three students has received a Merit Award in the Tertiary and Post-graduate Stream at the Hong Kong ICT Best Student Invention Award 2017. The award-winning project “Furnable” is an online platform for the sale of furniture and home design with AR (Augmented reality) and VR (Virtual reality) functions, enabling users to create their dream houses within the limited space offered in Hong Kong. The team members were Wong Kai-yin and Yeung Chung-hung, Year 2 students in the Department of Computer Science, and Cheung Chiu-wing, a Year 4 student in the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering. In addition, CityU received the Best Participating School in the Tertiary and Post-graduate Stream.
